re: How much emphasis do you put on portion size when gauging a restaurant?

By definition, tapas is small. So I am expecting that.

I actually like when a restaurants portion sizes are reasonable and not out of control. Helps me not overeat.
Agree. Most places serve way more than a person would serve themselves at home. And I have it ingrained that I don't want to waste the money I just spent on a meal so I force myself to eat way too much.

Depends on what they are serving. Love a big burger, don't need tons of pickled mushrooms.
I would say something about a slider coming out when I expected a meal.

Portions should be reasonable, I don't want 2 days worth of calories from a meal. However, if the portion is too small to even get a decent taste, that's a ripoff. The last time I went to Voodoo BBQ, and it's been years, I ordered the beans, the portion was maybe a jigger of beans, just keep your beans if they're that precious to you.
While waiting for a table at Sammy's I noticed every maw & paw leaving with a clam shell, is that what people want? Leftover fried food is gross, that means they're paying for a lot of inedible food.

i agree with it all depends on what type food it is ahead of time and the quality of restaurant
if im going to a fancy nice place, im expecting a small normal portion.
if i go to a hole in the wall mexican or italian joint, i want a decent portion. i know that shite is dirt cheap to make. i hate those italian joints that give you a pinch of pasta with sauce. its freaking flour egg and water, not that expensive.
thats one of the reasons i dont eat out for seafood anymore. i just buy fresh fish and cook it myself. im tired of the markup on fish in a restaurant. if you order a piece of sea bass or scallops, you will get 2 scallops or a 3 oz piece of sea bass and they charge you $10 an oz.
no thanks

How many times in your life have you left a restaurant hungry?
Twice. August & Compere Lapin. Each meal had 1-2 shared apps, salad, entree, and dessert.

Portion size means nothing to me

So, to make an extreme example, you'd be fine with a 3 oz filet for $55?
I only say this to illustrate that portion size is probably important to everyone in some sense.
It's not that one is necessarily looking for huge portions, but rather for value for the portion sizes.

Count me in the apparently minority camp of liking small portions. I can't eat much in one sitting, so I love places willing to split an entree or salad between two customers, or those willing to offer a half-size portion of something.
All too often, I can't eat the standard three courses b/c the portions are way too big. Would MUCH rather a variety of items/courses than a shovelful of protein/starch.

Do this all the time. Split an app, entree and dessert

It helps to know what it is before going and complaining.

I feel the same. If the portion is abnormally large but the food doesn't do well leftover, I'd be happier with a smaller portion and knock a few dollars off my tab.
We split loaded fries app last week and it ended up hurting the restaurant more than helping because neither of us ended up wanting to get entrees that we originally planned on getting. Cut that app in half and make it $5 instead of $8.50, and you'll still make money on the app AND we'll order an entree.

I like that places like tableau offer half sized portions

Very seldom. If anything it's griping about the portions in relation to value.
I think IPO here in BR was guilty of giving subpar value for portion size. When your theme is small plates and many plates are geared to give 2 bites each to 1.5 people at $12-15/plate with ingredients that I wouldn't call over the top expensive, I probably won't be back.
*I know they've redone the menu/pricing several times, but I have no idea what they're doing now as I kind of wrote it off.

I guess it would only be an issue if I was deciding between a few restaurants and all other things were equal. I might as well choose the one that will give me some leftovers so I can end up saving money.

By some standards, I suppose. I usually only burn an extra 8,000-11,000 calories a week. I really should up my 300+ mile per week average.

the only time I have made a decision regarding portion size would be if I wanted something leftover to eat later. Like if I knew I had a busy day at work coming up and nothing at home to take for lunch I may choose somewhere for dinner that would leave me with leftovers.
