How much emphasis do you put on portion size when gauging a restaurant?

Do you get little you annoyed when you hear people rave about a restaurant only to get a whole lot of average or even below average food?

Am I just jaded from years of taking clients to lunch and having them suggest a place only because of the plate-sized Country Fried Steak?

I'm guessing I sound like an arse but I'm just curious as to how much a large portion sways your propensity to recommend a place.

Only when portion sizes are really small. Huge portions aren't important

I was going to say this but I can't recall eating anywhere that the portions were too small.

How many times in your life have you left a restaurant hungry? Portion sizes should only be an issue if you leave hungry unless the food was simply inedible. It has been my experience that I request a doggie box much more often than I leave a restaurant hungry.

Oh, they're out there. If you go to some tapas places you'll get frustrated trying to fill yourself up on $12 small plates

Caring about portion size is extremely trashy and bourgeois in my opinion.

Yeah, but does your husband leave hungry?

Anyway, simply because a place has large portions doesn't mean it has lesser food in terms of taste. If it is the same as another place in taste, portion size matters to me.

I actually like when a restaurants portion sizes are reasonable and not out of control. Helps me not overeat.

most places serve too much ... would prefer to drop the price a bit in exchange for a smaller portion of just about everything ...

I've never eaten at a restaurant and thought that the serving size was too small. People who complain about that are probably eating at a restaurant that would expect a patron to order salad/soup, app, and entree, but they are only ordering an entree. That's what I'd expect, at least.

If I pay premium on a meal that can't fill me up...why wouldn't I just go the fast food route?

To eat merely to sate your hunger is base, crude, and animalistic. The culinary arts are meant to enliven the spirit and delight the mind.

I love eating at a nice restaurant and leaving not feeling like I need to be wheeled out of the place.

Very little. In my opinion, quantity does not relate to quality. If quantity of food is important to you go eat at Golden Corral.

I think this is what bugs me most about this phenomenon, if I really like something, I'm more likely to clean the plate. As I get older, I'm noticing that I'm choosing places that I know I won't be miserable when I leave.

When I'm eating with my wife, it is not uncommon for us to split an app and an entrée or several appetizers. Not for wanting to spend less money, just because leftovers are rarely as good as when they're initially plated and we don't need to eat anymore.

As to other comments, I also want to be clear that I'm not really talking about small portions in general. I can't think of a meal I've had lately that I liked, ate the entire dish, and left hungry. Rather, I just think there are lots of places that get a better reputation than they should just because they have notoriously large portions.

I also wonder if the pressure to be generous on the plate doesn't actually drive the quality of the average plate down because of the pressure and cost of the unnecessary food.

Don't care too much but I hate when it's too small

Like when you pay $30 for shrimp and grits and it's a tablespoon of grits with 3 shrimp on top. How is that supposed to fill someone up?

My biggest pet peeve is small salad portions. I eat a lot of business lunches and I have to eat healthy or else I'd be 300 lbs. decent places charge $15-20 for a salad and I can't stand when it's a damn pinch of lettuce with toppings. It's effin lettuce. Give me a few handfuls for crying out loud
