Has anyone had any experience with UPS damaging package. (Pellet grill box destroyed)

So UPS dropped off my rectec 340 pellet smoker yesterday. ($650.00)
And the box looks like it was hit by a truck. The driver kept apologizing saying he doesn’t know what happen and that he documented the box was damaged when he received it. Said to open it up and see if the grill had any damage.
I emailed rectec, still waiting on a response. I did not open the package yet because I know it’ll be a huge pain in the arse to try to get this thing packed back up if it is damaged. Quite honestly I’d be shocked if it has no damage. One of the legs is hanging out of the box scratched.
Would I have been better off not accepting package at all? I didn’t sign for it.
Who is responsible for damage in these situations?
I just feel like I don’t want a grill that works with a lot of moving parts and electronics being ping ponged around like a beach ball. Paying $650 for a grill, you want it in perfect like new condition...

The shipper is responsible, but you will likely have to go through who you bought it from to get it picked up and a new one sent.

You did the right thing. Rec Tec Customer Service is solid

Should I hold off from opening package?

I'd hold off on opening until RecTec responds. Although I doubt it would hurt to open it as you already have pictures of the condition it arrived in.

My RT-340 looked very similar when I received it and I was pissed. I rolled the dice, took pictures and opened mine up because I heard about how great the customer service was. Not a scratch on the grill once I got it out. I didn't have any parts protruding like you do though.

I would leave it boxed up until RecTec contacts you.
Would suck if they said UPS is going to return it to RecTec and you have it spread out all over your garage.

My wife recently got a box delivered by UPS. It had a lot of empty space in the box, so in my opinion, it was poorly packaged. The box was crushed, open, and the product was broken. I wonder if at the sorting facility heavy stuff just destroys lightweight stuff on the conveyor belts.

I used to work for FedEx, and 90% chance this is what happened.

Im sure Rectec will make it right for you. I recently just got a RT-700 and im convinced more engineering went into the packaging than the grill itself. It was delivered on a pallet.

That legit looks like it fell off the truck at speed and rolled down the asphalt for a bit before being put back on the truck. I ship and receive items daily and that is one of the worst I have seen. Damage on EVERY side is pretty unusual.
If the box gets caught in the conveyor machinery, it will usually be one or maybe two sides.

Had something similar happen recently with a light fixture. Manufacture immediately sent out another and they worked with the shipper to fix it on their end

The simple solution is to call the vendor you bought it from and tell them you are not accepting this in this condition. They will refund you, or send you another one.

I emailed then
Guy just called. Was awesome about it.
They are sending out another grill. He said I can use this one in the mean time if it works. Then mail it back after. But who wants to package that back up.
Just gonna leave it in box.

I got my rectec in yesterday... it didn’t come UPS though.

Be prepared for it to possibly look the same. If in doubt refuse it (if you are there to accept). This way the damaged unit is not in your way, and it will definitely be between the carrier and the vendor, no headaches for you.

Congrats on the new Rec-Tec Love my 700. Mine was delivered by freight truck, not UPS. I agree, I would not unpack that thing and assemble just to take it back apart and repack.
