The wife (no pics) and I are thinking ham for Christmas. The easy answer is either make it ourselves or go to Honey Baked Ham or a similar style place. Do yall have any out of this world hams to recommend? In Houston area, don't mind going anywhere in the area or having shipped. Thanks

Honey baked ham from the honey baked ham store served room temperature is hard to beat

We ordered a boneless Berkshire smoked ham from wild fork for thanksgiving and warmed it in the oven and put a homemade glaze on it and it was great, everyone really enjoyed it

Neither are better than the other , but different, can’t go wrong with either

Red foil spiral ham from Costco is damn fine as well

Ordered a ham from Snake River Farms for Thanksgiving 2021. Thought it was only marginally better than Honey Baked. Definitely not worth the extra $$

Get you a smoked bone-in ham, I prefer non spiral sliced as it dries out if you try to baste it for long, and make a glaze. Google ham glazes and find one you like.

Bake the ham at 300 for about 3-4 hours (or google for other times and temps) with the glaze and baste every 15-30 minutes. It will come out great!

Christmas Ham

Here’s a thread I had last year for a real do-it-yourself ham, lol.

Get a quality bone-in hickory or applewood smoked ham. Pecan also works well. Heat it up in a brown paper sack.

Brown Bag Ham

quote:

DIRECTIONS Place oven racks in the lowest and highest positions then preheat oven to 325 degrees. Place a cooling rack on top of a 9x13" baking dish then set aside. Cut the handles off a paper grocery bag then place the ham inside. Roll the opening of the bag down then press the bag around the ham and place on top of the cooling rack. Bake for 18 minutes per pound (so for a 2lb ham bake for 36 minutes,) then remove ham from bag, slice and serve.

NOTES — Be sure the paper bag is not touching the sides of the oven, back of the oven, or oven baking racks. You can also remove the top rack if you have a place to store it.

The problem with that is you just have a plain heated up ham. Glazing a ham is where it’s at!

I made this one and it was amazing. I followed the directions as is. I couldn't put the cover on the crock pot so I covered it with aluminum foil and it worked perfectly.

I don’t like sugar on my ham. The brown bag ham is the best way if you like a juicy, smoked ham flavor.

Have you even tried it that way before shitting on it?

I buy a ham from The Pit Room every Thanksgiving…outstanding.

Keep an eye out on social media if they are doing Christmas orders.

Feges also has a good one as well.

These places are all in Houston for the record.

I didn’t shite on it. I simply said the problem with that method was you can’t glaze it. If you don’t want glaze, by all means go for it.

Be warned though, if there are some type of chemicals in paper bags, it may not be safe to bake food in. I don’t know what paper bags are made of and if they are dangerous or not, just proposing the idea.

I have made Tom Fitzmorris' root beer glazed ham multiple times. The glaze is very good. I usually at least double it and sometimes triple it.

I do not recommend a spiral ham for this.

Gris, if you liked that one, this will drive you right on over the edge. I make it with spiral sliced. I inject glaze down the bone and glaze top. Messy, yes. Outstanding, you betcha.

You rang?
The best ham looks like meat. Not like a pink marble top table.
