Ghost in the Machine..... quote: Its a great beer, but you're being a homer. I agree that its the best ipa in the southeast, but its not quite top tier imo. After having it again last night, I really have no qualms about putting it in Double Jack's category. And I like Double Jack at least as much as I like Pliny. We're talking degrees of awesomenss here. Some of you are suffering from anti-homerism, in that you don't want to believe a locally produced beer can be as good as the great ones you've had from other parts of the country. The bottle I had last night was phenomenal. It's everything I want in a DIPA.

Would you say its as good as heady?

I like this thread. I think it's great everyone here has their own opinions and speaks them.

I think Heady is better. I have a hard time thinking of what #2 would be on my list. GITM may or may not be it, but it would certainly be among the pool of candidates vying for that spot.

The problem is that I haven't had most of the other beers that would be in the same conversation as fresh as I have GITM. So maybe that's clouding my judgement. But there's something to be said for such a fresh DIPA.

Another thing I was thinking about is that maybe there are bottle variations. The one I had last night was far hoppier in both aroma and flavor than the one we shared last week. But it started out at the right temp, so maybe that accounts for it.

I agree with this.

All of this is personal opinion anyways, case in point a guy on FB last night saying he didnt like GITM due to its lack of body. Which is exactly what I want in an ipa but he wants body.

I am just happy that we have a beer that can legitimately be discussed in the same sentence as other really hyped (and great) beers.

:kige:

I used to kind of write-off freshness for IPAs, but I've done some tinkering a home and there is a huge difference between hop aroma and taste at 3 days, a week, two weeks, and a month. A recent beer I've made has dropped off in the past couple days as it's chilled and settled. The day I kegged it, it was smack-you-in-the-face cat piss. Not so much anymore.

Hopefully all you assholes haven't drank it all before I get to Parish tomorrow.

Right on. I agree with all that. I also agree with frat thats its so great for us finally to have a local beer that can stir debate like this and evoke the names of some big boys.

So double jack is 9.99 for a 6-pack and GitM is 12.99 for a bomber.

That's a 4 to 1 price discrepancy.
I would HOPE GitM runs circles around DJ.

y'all are just going to have to accept that a small, upstart brewery is going to cost more than one of the bigs of the craft beer world

Actually I think DJ may be a 4-pack. It's been a few months since I could get my hands on some. Someone can confirm here.

Heady is a totally different animal than DJ, pliny or abrasive

A true dipa and a hop bomb are different categories, imho

I haven't had any of the Hill Farmstead DIPAs, so I can't make a comparison. They make up 5 of the top 12 Beer Advocate top DIPAs.

The markup on these bottles is crazy as well. The local retailers know that they can mark them up more than they can most other stuff. I know some numbers about cost, and let's just say that the retailers are making a killing on a per bottle basis.
