Do you feel comfortable leaving gas stove simmering while away from the house?

I'm nervous leaving the slow cooker on when away

I do not.

If a covered pot, I have put it in a “slow” oven (200F or a little less) for the time I’ll be gone.

About two months ago, I set a pot to simmer and went outside to work in the yard. My wife came in from outside 20 minutes later and was alerted by a heavy smell of gas so I went inside to investigate. Apparently, the A/C kicked on and blew out the flame on the burner but the burner kept spewing gas. Thankfully, we were able to catch it before something terrible happened. There is my answer. Stay safe.

I might walk outside for a few minutes to tend to the grill or get something from the outside fridge, but I don’t ever leave a stove or oven on if I’m leaving the house.

No. I will leave something in the oven on a low cook. You can simmer in your oven.

Crock pots and large electric roasters are good for long simmers when you need to sleep or leave.

I do it. In all my years of cooking I have never had any of my gas stove fires go out and release gas. Am I supposed to? I guess not, but really I think the equipment is sound enough to not have to worry about it.


Now I wouldn't leave it unattended all day, but I do go run errands if something is on a low simmer. As long as it's not something that will boil over and effect the fire I take that risk.

After reading this thread I must be in the tremendous minority; I do it all the time. I just make sure there isn’t anything around the flame that could possible catch fire; then the knob all the way down and go about my business.
