Participated in another plant jambalaya cookoff recently and placed 17th out of 36 teams.
Everyone that tried it before the judge's said it had great taste and color, Apparently the judges didn't agree.

The plant provides all of the ingredients and makes the following rules:

Cooking Ingredients Provided:
5 lbs. of Pork
5 lbs. of Sausage
5 lbs. of Rice
5 lbs. of Onions, chopped
1 small jar minced garlic
1 sleeve Green Onions, chopped (1 box)
8 oz bottle of Hot Sauce
2 cups Celery, chopped
1 Bell Pepper, chopped
Seasonings Provided:
Red pepper
Granulated Garlic
Salt
Black Pepper
Other Provisions:
48 oz jug of Cooking Oil
3 gallons of water

Do not substitute meat or vegetables.
Do not add liquid smoke or Kitch Bouquet
No cutting meat or onions (anything) on site

I couldn't image trying to discern between 36 jambalaya's, from 36 coonasses, all using the same ingredients. That's got to be a whole shitload of hair splitting. ..

Any leftovers?

After we turn a plate into the judges, the rest is collected and fed to the rest of the plant workers on day/night shifts.

I always keep a few go boxes to bring home.

This was my thought as well.

How distinguishable could any of those really been?

For sure.

The winner had a very light-colored jambalaya. No idea what seasoning he used.

You can put as much or as little as you want from the list and any kind of seasoning you choose. This year I used Nunu's

I placed 5th a few years ago using Cajunland

I was a judge in a gumbo competition.

The preferences of my fellow judges were purely whimsical as if they just signed up to get a free meal. I felt like I was the only one taking it seriously by putting thought into my scoring sheets and re-trying some just to be certain of my rankings/scoring.

It should not humble you. It’s just like getting a 5-4 Supreme Court decision where you know judges are just firm in their different criteria and some are just dumbasses.
