Once a year, I have to break down and make Hamburger Helper Beef Noodle.

Add a can of Le Sueur green peas. Just love that combo.

I've been waiting for the hamburger helper post.... Our go to was the potato stroganoff... Threw in a teeny can of mushrooms (pieces and stems, lol)

Mama used to make rice and egg in a pan on the stove when I was just to young to know we were just poor.

I still fix some of the above listed things. Two that haven't been mentioned yet- smoked sausage fried in a pan with a side of blue box kraft mac and cheese

open faced cheese toast with a can of heated cream of mushroom soup poured over

pear with mayo, sharp cheddar, and iceberg was also made with pineapple

Break up cinnamon Graham crackers and eat them in a bowl with milk like cereal. I’ll eat sliced peaches that way too with a little sugar. We used to eat sliced bananas that way too but I haven’t done that since I was a kid. Another thing I haven’t had since I was a kid was what we called “milk soup.” That was just white bread torn up and eaten in a bowl of milk like cereal with brown sugar added. I used to take little pieces of the bread without crust and squeeze them into little chewy dough balls for an occasional surprise in the dish.

But Graham crackers and milk rules. I’ve got a box right now just for that purpose.

We used to have buttered toast with cinnamon sugar on it. I haven’t had that in ages but it was pretty good. I should probably have it again because the last time I went to Penzey’s to stock up on peppercorns they gave me a little shaker of cinnamon sugar as a bonus gift. Ooooh, thanks so much! Like I can’t make my own cinnamon sugar. What they gave me was a spice shaker jar that I’ll probably eventually empty and use for something else like crushed dried peppers.

Here’s another thing, and this is borderline obscene. My mom used to bake a lot of cakes and decorate them with frosting (some people call it icing) that was made from Crisco, powdered sugar, a little vanilla extract, and then colored with food coloring. There was always leftover frosting which my mom kept in Tupperware containers in the fridge. She taught me that you could make a sandwich by spreading the frosting on bread and sprinkling cinnamon sugar on it. It tasted a lot like a cinnamon roll. I used to come home from school, make one of those, and then lie down on the floor in front of the tv. I’m sure that had nothing to do with why I developed a weight problem.

Hell yes. Maybe a leaf iceberg.

My parents did this

They will also do shredded lettuce, Mayo cheese & pineapple chucks all mixed together
When they are feeling fancy they will top a lettuce leaf with a pineapple ring, blob of Mayo, shredded cheese & cherry on top

That was considered a special treat since you had to "make" the crust. It was fun project.

Once in a blue moon, I will buy a box and make one doctored up, but you still get that familiar taste.

My mom didn't like to cook and from middle school on, I did a lot of cooking. Mostly the hamburger and tuna helper kind of stuff, sometimes with a mix, sometimes just winging it.

I occasionally throw together some pasta, cheese, tuna, and peas or make fried bologna and cheese sandwiches. Her Velveeta mac and cheese or eggplant casserole was good too.

Made some pigs in the blanket for the kids today. Always reminds me of stock mornings at a little grocery store I used to work at, we'd go get a few packs of crescent rolls, hot dogs and rip a few slices of colby jack from the deli and a couple minutes later we feasted.

My dad worked shift work in plants as well. When he worked dogs he would come home with fresh made biscuits. If you asked me at the time what they produced at the plant, I would’ve said biscuits and flashlights.

My mom used to make this and I haven’t had it in years but I need to make it. She called it ‘chipped meat’, but it was basically crappy lunch meat sliced up, heated with a white gravy, and then served on toast with a side of peas is how we always had it. It was an old military dish apparently.

cheese and crackers

Mom used to make this snack with Saltine crackers and cheddar cheese on top. She would bake or toast them in the oven. Same thing?

ETA: I still make these in the toaster oven, with a douse of hot sauce immediately upon removal.

We used to have that. We eventually decided we liked Appian Way better. But we’d add Hormel pepperoni, some partially browned and drained ground beef, then add Kraft shredded mozzarella cheese halfway through baking. I haven’t made that in years.

I’ve thought about giving it a shot again but I have a lot of pizza joints around me. There are three new ones close by that I haven’t tried yet. I don’t think any of them are major chain stores. But speaking of chain stores, I don’t know if you have Romeo’s Pizza near you but when I tried it I thought their sauce tasted like Chef Boyardee’s.

Beenie Weenies was the go-to whenever we went fishing with my Dad. That and Chocolate Soldiers!

Man, I loved those! It was the only time we'd get them.
Tomorrow is his Birthday (R.I.P, Dale), so maybe I need to get some Beenie Weenies!!
Do they still make Chocolate Soldiers?
