re: Caymus is overrated

It’s way too fruity for me. On a menu of similar price wine, I’m never going for the Caymus.

$70/bottle @ Costco. Saw they had a shipment on Thursday night.

First sip is good but then gets increasingly too sweet for me as well.

I prefer Duckhorn over Caymus

I think There is a place for all types of wine.

I take A bigger issue to Joe Wagner convincing everyone Pinot Noir needed to be a fruit bomb.

It would not surprise me if they do. Caymus, Frank Family and many other CA purple fruit bombs probably do.

Taste is so subjective. I've had $10.00 bottles I loved and very expensive bottles (that other people have bought LOL) that I don't care for. Had Caymus last night. Got it at Costco for $69 and I enjoyed it. Wasn't the best I've ever had and far from the worst.

Hard to say what "worth it" means when it comes to Napa Cabernet. It sells even at $80. It's very fruit forward, drinkable for the masses and name recognition makes the demand go up. There are plenty of California Cabernets that are every bit as good but my $500 watch keeps just as good time as the Rolex I once had.

When we do work dinners I'm usually charged with handling wine. So I've become fairly good at graduating clients/friends from Caymus/Austin Hope/etc. to other fairly bold, fruit-forward reds that have a little more nuance.

Usually, by end of the night I'm getting comments about whatever we've switched to being preferred over the Caymus/similar. Obviously Caymus is an initial crowd pleaser, but when you're a few bottles into it and you're switched to something almost as approachable but with more depth, it's easy to pick up and gravitate toward. Caymus is easy to drink all night, but an hour in nobody is raving about how good it is, in my experience.
