Cast iron: how much does one really need?

I know it can be a collection, but wondering if it is more like knives where you really only need three (paring, chef and bread)
Maybe the three cast irons you need is the egg skillet, the beater cast iron and the 7+ quart pot.
What say the F&D?

I have a big skillet, and a 5 qt pot for jambalaya, That works for me just fine.

The flat iron is about the only piece I dont use often enough. Use the 6.5" skillet almost every day. A couple skillets, but they are kind of redundant, granted they double as lids too.
Some pots may only get used sparingly, but that is because crowd size dictates pot size.

Need? One big skillet and one big pot.
Now, wants are a whole other issue.

I would agree. One big dutch oven with a tight lid and one big skillet should do the trick. I have way more though and feel guilty for not using it.

I have a 10 inch and 12 inch skillet, a 7 qt traditional dutch oven, and a 7 qt Le Creuset enameled. The traditional dutch oven I pretty much just fry shite in now and do everything I used to do in it in the LC. I use both skillets regularly.
I have a panini press/grill pan cast iron thing that someone gave me one time that I've honestly used maybe once. Also was given a giant cast iron wok that has literally never been taken out of the box and I'd be lying if I said I knew what closet it was in.

I have several pieces, some used more than others though.
I have three 10 inch frying pans(one used for cornbread only), a 4 qt. small pot with lid for cooking small amounts of stews, soups and deep frying fish etc., one 12 qt. for larger meals, a flat griddle for pancakes and another griddle with raised ridges for doing steaks, fish, etc.
Plus the hooks and such that can make them useful for cooking over a campfire.

I only use my main skillet and my Dutch ovens (one indoor the other outdoor).
I occasionally find myself wishing that I had a cast iron press for searing.

I have 4 skillets... a 10" Field skillet that I use all the damn time, its home is on my stovetop. I have an 8" Lodge that used to be my go-to, a 10" Lodge that was a gift and rarely gets used, and a 12" deep Emeril cast iron that only comes out when I need the size.
Also two specialty items, one square ridged grill-mark skillet that I hardly ever use because it's a bitch to clean. An Æbleskiver pan that's really only used every now and then.
I have a cast iron grill press that I get out when I cook burgers.
And two enameled cast iron dutch ovens.
I certainly don't need all of that.

Depends on what you’re cooking....Inhave three enameled cast iron 5 quart Dutch ovens, because I routinely cook three loaves of bread at a time. Three fit inside my oven at the same time. So what would be redundant to some is an essential selection for me.
I rarely use the skillets. Dunno why, I use an All Clad stainless 10x more than the CI (which is mostly used for cornbread).

2 pots and 2 skillets. The bigger pot can sous vide pretty well.

I have a bunch, a lot rarely used, but I just like having them. Bought a few, inherited a few from various dead relatives, still looking.

Regular cast iron = 6", 12" skillets and large dutch oven for gumbo, stews and jambalaya.
Porceling coated cast iron for red sauce and cream dishes (4qt, 7qt and oval 7 qt).

Everyone has different needs, depending on what they cook and prefer to use. It has no importance to need, but would not give up any that we have. There a few more (more obscure pieces) that I will someday buy, given a chance to pick them up.

I probably have 25+ pieces ranging from corn stick muffin pans to various skillets to around half a dozen pots and Dutch ovens. You can't have too much. Some are well over a hundred years old and have been in the family the entire time.

I have a few, but honestly, the only two to get really regular use are:
The 12 Inch Skillet
#1 most used pot/pan/skillet in the house.
Lodge - 12 Inch Skillet
The 9 Quart Dutch Oven (without feet)
This is absolutely great for deep frying anything.

I have three identical pots, two identical skillets, an oval roaster, a griddle, etc.
Most of my duplicates are because I got my grandmothers' pieces. The best one gets used, the others are kept as heirlooms.
You can never have too much cast iron. It's less a useful thing and more a cultural/sentimental thing for me.
Incidentally, there's a picture around here somewhere of MD's cast iron collection. It's glorious with the exception of the Miss. St. coozie that taints the picture.
ETA: Didn't read the whole thread. It's NOT the picture that he posted up there. That picture doesn't have the corruption in it.
