my wife is getting me a smoker for my birthday, but enlisted me for help cause she doesn't know much about these. from my research traeger is the top of the line, but quite pricey. it appears z-grills are very good as well, but with a smaller price tag. pit boss is all over in terms of reviews, so probably won't go that route.

any recs or insight is appreciated!

Not even close, I've got a Rec Teq for 2 years now and it is the tits. With that said we are looking at buying my dad a pellet grill for Fathers Day so I went to put my hands on a Pit Boss and Traeger at local stores. IMO the PB feels to be of better quality that the Traeger. I cannot imagine someone shelling out that kind of dough for the Traeger when You can get the RT for slightly more.

I would look at the new Char-griller gravity fed charcoal smoker. Essentially a pellet smoker but charcoal/lump flavor. With these out now I really don’t see the point of pellet grills anymore.

this is essentially what i do with my offset, but i can add wood. doesn't seem like that's an option, so would be a no go for me.

I have the Recteq Bullseye and for $400 I can't imagine a better deal. I love the thing.

On Sale @ Home Depot

Camp Chef is another brand that I would look at.

For all things bbq/grilling I strongly recommend looking at AmazingRibs.com for their reviews on the unit or perhaps similar units made by that brand.

I've only had mine for a little over a week but damn, i love it. Way better than the Pit Boss I have.

What do you mean can’t add wood? It can be mixed in the hopper with the charcoal or placed on the tray under the hopper. All automated. I don’t have one but know multiple people that do that came from pellet grills and they love it.

Should consider the Camp Chef Woodwind. It's on the same level in quality and performance as the RecTec but has some QOL features that the ReqTec does not. I've owned both and like the Camp Chef better, not that there is anything wrong with the bull.

Fixed that for you boss. I'm a Green Mountain guy but if you're looking for bang-for-the-buck, I'd give the nod to Rec Tec. A couple of buddies each have the Pit Boss and they seem to do just fine but I can't speak to their longevity.

Top of the line are Pitts & Spitts and Yoder.

Under those and best "bang for buck" is probably a rectec.

Traeger is literally the worst value.

Camp Chef
Smoke Daddy Pellet Pro
Rec Tec
Green Mountain

Too damn many to choose from. The above are all the bang for buck brands from my 2 months of research. I live in "cook a sauce" country so not many I know have experienced a pellet grill. I am leaning Pellet Pro for longevity, but the Camp Chef is more versatile. I will cook a sauce on which ever one I get.

I just got my Rectec RT-700 in a few weeks ago ... It is a beast of a pellet smoker. Great quality build.

I have a 1 year old Rec tec 700 and a 6 month old Camp Chef Woodwind 36.

Build quality and performance they are identical. They both are equal in temperature stability as well as imparting smoke.

The only note is that the Woodwind has some features I wish the Rec Tec has, such as the cookpot cleanout process and the sidekick option. The apps are different, and both have their pluses and minuses.
