I think Traeger is very middle of the road. I have a Rec Tec, which I love and consider higher end than Traeger. And above that you have Yoder and Pitts and Spitts grills, which are even higher end.

I’ve had a Rectec 590 for a little over a year. I love it. It does everything I want it to do. Can’t speak towards any other brand, as the RT is the only pellet grill I’ve owned.

I would look at the new Char-griller gravity fed charcoal smoker. Essentially a pellet smoker but charcoal/lump flavor. With these out now I really don’t see the point of pellet grills anymore.

This is the correct answer and I have a Yoder. I have a Masterbuilt gravity feed and flavor wise, puts the pellet grill to shame. You can’t beat real wood flavor.

Tell her to stay away from pellet grills because you want to learn how to really smoke.

I have a 1 year old Rec tec 700 and a 6 month old Camp Chef Woodwind 36.

Build quality and performance they are identical. They both are equal in temperature stability as well as imparting smoke.

Still feel they are pretty equal after almost aonther year?

I've narrowed my search down to these 2 grills and getting ready to pull the trigger.

Yes. Note that when I am talking about the Camp Chef I am referring specifically to the Woodwind model. I don't have experience with the others.

As far as pellet grills go, it's still amazing. It's also held up well to being outside through the winter.

If you have an offset, why are you getting a pellet?

I have had a Rectec Bullseye for about two years. Highly recommend. And their customer service is fantastic!

I believe traeger moved their production to China a few years ago and quality suffered. Also the specs on the grill got worse (steel gage).

I received a traeger 570 last year as a gift. I’m sure there are higher end grills but I can’t say much negative either. I personally have not had any issues and do like the WiFi feature. Best advice I can give is read up and select the one with the features you want. Lots of good options BUT pellet smokers do not give the heavy smoke flavor of a stick burner or lump coal.

Just looking for convience with subtle smoke flavors.

While I love a heavy smoke flavor, the wife and little ones do not. A pellet grill seems to fit that bill.

So you got a traeger and feel confident making that claim about all pellet smokers?

Yes I do. Pellet grills while convenient do not put the same smoke flavor as a stick burner or lump coal. You can be against traeger all you want but the reviews are pretty consistent across the board. I use my traeger but can definitely tell a difference in my BGE. Check out Mad Bbq Scientist he is pretty thorough on bbq reviews and techniques. Most can’t tell much difference in the pellet wood types or brands either.

It has too many sensors on it. I ditched mine after a year. Great concept but pain in the arse. Also the bottom part of the charcoal bin will burnout if you use it often(it’s designed that way apparently). There are mods to fix but you will spend another $250 on the mods.

I went back to an old reliable stick burner offset Oklahoma Joe bandera.
