A favorite is Smoking Yard’s BBQ in Idaho Springs, Co. The sliced brisket and pulled pork are excellent.

However, the best barbecue restaurant meal I’ve had was at Buxton Hall in Asheville. They do a whole hog pork plate that was fabulous and do mussels cooked in a pot under the hog that is one of the 10 best dishes I’ve ever had. Really enjoyed the place, even though I realize it’s not likely to make most such ‘Best Ever’ ratings lists.
I also haven’t tried any of the big Texas places, but Buxton Hall was incredible. I love that style of BBQ. We had BBQ at Rodney Scott’s Charleston location that was also very good, but Buxton really stood out.
Edit: helps that there are like 10 high quality breweries within a few minutes walk, also.

I haven't been to Franklin or LaBBQ or Snow's but Meat U Anywhere in Grapevine, TX was absolutely great. The brisket was nearly perfect.

This had been a fun and interesting thread. Since I was mostly introduced to BBQ in TX, I'm obviously partial to it.
It's not just a style, it's a culture.
So going to some of the websites for the other joints in other states that have been mentioned one notices some other BBQ cultural differences:
- Our joints tend to have relatively simple menus compared to eastern joints.
- In TX, beef (brisket, ribs, and sausage) are foregrounded while sauces are mostly an after thought. Elsewhere, pork reigns and sauces are a big deal.
- We order at a counter by the pound, it's cut right in front of you, served on butcher paper on a tray.
Someday, hope to sample some from my BBQ brethren east of the Mississippi River.

I've only been to The Shed once, and I thought it was good. Not good enough to be considered for a "Best," but I've had a lot worse.
A lot of it depends on what you were raised with. While I love brisket and listed Central BBQ as my favorite (for ribs), I grew up on pit cooked BBQ with a spicy, mustard, vinegar sauce, as style with roots in S. Carolina, but with a "colony" around the Auburn/Valley/Columbus area.

Did Danken Trail die? I had not heard that..
Nope. Drove by earlier and it was packed. They do have great baked beans but the best belong to Podnuh’s.

Another vote for Germantown Commissary here. And an honorable mention to Elwood’s Shack. It’s not a true BBQ spot, but they turn out some damn fine BBQ products. Just west of I-40 and north of Sam Cooper Blvd in Memphis.
