Hard to truly go wrong, but I like Smitty's.

I was not impressed with Kreuz. La Barbecue in Austin blows it away.

The most underrated BBQ joint in the Austin area.

I hit Smitty's my last time through. It is worthy, but I still think I prefer Cooper's in Llano and the original Salt Lick outside of Austin.

Nearly everything I've seen has it top two in Austin.

My wife & children agree with the OP but I liked Black's a little better.

As for la Barbecue it was the best I've ever had but I wouldn't say it just blows the Lockhart joints away. They're all very good BBQ joints.

Smitty's = best brisket.

Black's = best beef ribs.

I personally don't care for any smoked sausage. And wasn't blown away by Kreuz's version.

Just for the record, I've only tried the brisket at Kreuz, smittys and the other place (think it was blacks).

So my choice as Kreuz as the best is based solely on brisket.

I like them all but two things that are overlooked. The chopped beef sandwich at Chisholm Trail is killer. And some of the best pork ribs around are Smitty's and never talked about.

The shoulder clods are great too and never see anywhere but Lockhart.

Went to kreutz one evening and they were out of brisket, but offered up shoulder instead. We went with it, with a bit of disappointment. Holy crap that was a happy accident. It was great, but the rare occasions I make it to Lockhart, I still order brisket.
