I don't feel strongly either way. My mom's side of the family says no (Texans), and my dad's side of the family says yes (Ohioans).

The great thing about chili is that you can change up ingredients, and it still typically ends up delicious.

I use Trappeys Red Kidney Beans with Chili Gravy and do not rinse. That’s if I’m making chili for my husband and/or other people. I make a small pot without beans for me.

I do it both ways, but for a hearty cold weather chili, I use one can each light kidney, red kidney, and black beans. Hotdog chili and Texas style (cubed meat) chili needs no beans in my opinion.

My philosophy exactly.

Not just no but hell no. This is just one of those things any Texan worth their salt understands because Chili is our most personal dish and so you want it to be preserved in the way that made it so important to us.

I'm fine with people putting beans in their chili and I fully agree that beans can be a nice addition, but I ask that people call it chili w/ beans. If you just say Chili, that should imply no beans. Heres a good recipe: Texas Red Chili

I do this, but sub out one of your kidneys for cannellinis.

Beans or no beans, but chili over rice is good shite. Also my wife makes a black eyed pea chili that is fantastic.

Generally canned red kidney beans. Sometimes I'll use canned black beans. Sometimes I'll go the extra mile and cook some dried pinto beans.

That's a big no from me. I can't recall ever cooking a pot of chili and putting beans in it and I've been making it for close to 50 years.

I use gound beef and small chunks of beef diced up to make my chili.

I love beans, so yes, the beans are the best part. Red, black, pinto, whatever you like.

I'm a big fan of most beans: Pinto, Red, Navy, Great Northern, Lima, Black, etc. but just not in my chili.

Monday's at this house is red beans and rice day usually with jalapeno cornbread.

Only time I use cannellini’s is if my wife thinks a red base will bother her stomach, so I make a white turkey chili

Yes, but raw chopped onions are even more essential than beans

We use black beans for chili and for taco soup. If I'm cooking it on the stove in my dutch oven, I go ahead and add them right after the meat is browned. If I'm lazy and doing crockpot chili, I brown the meat then put it in the crockpot with seasonings and chopped onions to let those cook down some first. Then add in some rotel and black beans after an hour or so.

Most people don’t make “competition chili” at home even if they think they are, so you can put whatever the hell you want in it.

My wife calls the taco soup I make chili.
