I do it both ways, but for a hearty cold weather chili, I use one can each light kidney, red kidney, and black beans.

Hotdog chili and Texas style (cubed meat) chili needs no beans in my opinion.

And yes, the “real chili” is stewed meat with no beans, so if you’re cooking in a real competition in the Southwest, don’t use beans.

Yep. But that's mostly because making chili is usually the 4th stage of a pot of red beans for us. Typically only makes it that far if I make 2lbs and forget to freeze some.
