what equipment do you have? Whats your favorite bean?

After going to Italy last year and tasting some of the best coffee in the world, i want to venture off more into the coffee world and experiment with cold brew, like i have with espresso the past year.

we just use one of the many cold brew things they sell on amazon. grind the beans a little more coarse than for hot brewing and toss it in the fridge for 2 days

You can get a cold brew kits online. Brews about a gallon from a pound of coffee if I recall correctly. Make sure you coarse grind your beans to get the most flavor wise.

Toddy Maker is all you need.

Now that I buy my coffee from Costco I purchased a larger 8qt container to brew my iced coffee. I purchase larger filters from Toddy to strain the coffee in the same process using their filter. I end up making 3qts of concentrait from a 2lb bag of coffee.

i dont like the tody system with the stopper. I ordered the Ovalware System

Has anyone gotten into water chemistry? I guess being a beer brewer it would be easier for me to do something simple over someone who doesnt.

Toddy also sells individual bags. Pour the grinds in the bag, seal it, place in water, then remove after desired time. Clean up is easier. This is what I do now that I brew larger amounts. No stopper needed.

well you don't stick your hand into the cold brew, just remove it from the bottom

We use a Toddy. I just buy whatever beans are most economical at Costco and grind them coarsely.

For the Toddy filters soak in one part bleach to about ten parts water if they clog or start draining slow. Just make sure to rinse the filter well. I have been using the same three filters for a couple of years now.

I'm by no means a cold brew guru, but why does it make so little coffee? Obviously its stronger, but 1lb of beans to 3-4 qts of cold brew coffee seems very low and strong?

Is there a benefit to making it that strong other than simply taste preference?

you can dilute it if you want to so it isnt as strong.

3-4 qts of cold brew is diluted 1 to 1 with water for hot coffee or milk for iced coffee. Drinking the cold brew concentrate would not be good.

It's extremely economical. You can take 1 lb of cheap coffee beans and make a good bit of good tasting hot or iced coffee. Cold brew is less acidic for those who have problems with reflux. Also cold brew is the only good choice for iced coffee. If you tried to ice regular coffee you'd melt all the ice, leaving a diluted mess.

ETA I use the filtron. Works great

I'm going to have to look into these Toddy bags. I have the system with the filters, but the glass is so thin it can crack easily and it's expensive to replace (for what it is).

Amazon cold brew pitcher. Easy to do. Go to the store and grind the coffee yourself and make it a little more coarse so it doesn’t come through the filter

Yes agree. After my caraft broke twice I ended up using a half gallon kosher pickle jar with the lid. Works perfect with the Toddy hopper.

On a side note, I make sun tea in a gallon pickle jar as well.
