On September 25, 2020, Jax-Tiger issued a cooking challenge. The first one was fun, despite having only a few participants. Jax was busy with work (if I recall correctly), and I volunteered to coordinate the challenges. And here we are, three years later, forty challenges deep.

Suggestions from participants, voters, and viewers helped the format evolve over time. I thought having a consistent order of things would help with managing expectations. The rules have been (perhaps, regrettably) loose, with the prevailing idea being, “let the voters decide,” whenever anyone wanted to interpret the intent of the challenge differently. It has served us well.

Other than one particular a-hole who suggested more than once that I was counting votes in my favor (in a public vote, where any one at any time could’ve checked my math) and the assholes who try to make their vote choice as annoyingly hard to interpret as possible, most of you have been great! Haha. I chose not to call out the voting assholes because knowing the nature of the beast, it would’ve invited more people to do the same. Why am I calling it out now, you ask? Because it will no longer be any concern of mine.

I always try to handle things fairly for everyone, but when I opened the thread and saw Mad Dogg’s post and realized it was a group submission with many dishes, I knew immediately that I was in a no-win situation and I’d be the one to look like the a-hole. Fine.

But c’mon, guys. Y’all had a fabulous party with a stunning looking array of foods, made by some of the best cooks on TD. Why wouldn’t y’all want to do a separate thread showcasing the food and the event, with each TD person submitting their dish for the challenge? I get that y’all wanted to wow us. It certainly had impact. Thankfully, Ron and Nfamous shared their pics and processes with the group.

When I commented that I was going to confer with the committee, I was trying to use humor to buy some time while I tried to figure out the right way to handle it. When I said, “The committee has decided there is no reason to care,” it was because I’d just had an epiphany that I didn’t HAVE to stress about it! This isn’t some paid employment. I’m doing it for fun! But it’s not fun when you feel uneasy about making a decision, so why continue? Also, Gris can attest to the fact that I’ve been considering ending my time as challenge host for awhile. This just helped me see that it was time.

I will count the votes on this 40th challenge. I will announce the winners. I will even ask the winner what the next challenge will be. But I won’t set the date, issue reminders, announce the rules, or count the votes ever again. I have updated the stickied thread with the challenge info, and will add in today’s winners after they are announced.

On another note, I’m proud to say I’m the only one who has submitted a dish in all forty challenges! Woohoo! I know I’m not a great technician in the kitchen, and I’m far too lazy to make some of the labor intensive dishes that some of you make, but I DO understand the concept that it has to look good on the plate and complicated does not always mean better.

On another other note, I have been consistently amazed by many of the posters whose creativity, energy, and willingness to showcase and share their talent, skill, and imagination is just mind blowing. Y’all rock.

Jax-Tiger, thanks for starting this TD food challenge tradition. Long may it live!

This makes me sad, Darla, because you're one of my very favorite posters and I love the humor you bring to these challenges.

I totally get it, though. Shame on those bad apples, and thanks for all the work you've put into this over the years.

Admittedly, I have never participated, but I have enjoyed following! So many creative, talented cooks in this bunch.

I hope someone else steps in keep the challenges going, but they have big shoes to fill!

I have never competed in the challenge but I thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the entries and making sure I vote when I remembered.

Thank you Darla!

I think you've done a good job, Darla. I think everyone wanted to shower Mad Dogg (Or with Mad Dogg) with love because he and his SO hosted a damn good party that coincidentally fell in the same timeframe as the theme that was chosen. Everything relating to that group (myself included) is always in jest (G rated compared to half the crap these idiots ((myself included)) post). If there is a true winner, it is all of us on the f&db because it's about the culinary journey and all the friends we met a long the way.

Sounds like you are volunteering! I second your offer! All in favor?

Oh crap. I hit send too quickly.

Thanks for all your effort Miss Darla. You earned every penny they paid you for the past three years. It has been a pleasure seeing your work to make it successful.

Sorry to hear this, hope someone steps up. Most of the people who appreciate this challenge, like me, don't even contribute.

That said, the easiest solution would have been to just disqualify the submission and have us individually enter them. I promise you nobody would have argued that.

Never entered, but always liked looking at the submissions. I appreciate the work you put in to get it all the way to 40!

Darla,

Thanks for all your contribution over the years. It's been awesome and helped make this board so much more fun, exciting, and informational.

I think this is a perfect ending of your run as host of the FDB challenge.

The Mexican Fiesta entry was I beleive all in good fun, and hopefully wasn't too much of an annoyance, but was likely the straw that broke the camel's back.

Thank you again!

I didn't see the controversy until after Darla replied. I also suggested everyone submit individual entries to not only avoid controversy, but also so we could get more background information on what went into each dish and good plating pictures.

Darla has done a magnificent job with these challenges and I wish I could help more but I nwver know what my schedule is going to allow me to do. I fear that the challenge will wither on the vine without Darla.

What if we created an actual committee? We could all rotate and take some of the more labor intensive jobs off of Darla? We could rotate the job of counting the votes and putting together the photos.

I would love it if Darla would continue to make the announcements, but we could let others do the heavy lifting behind the scenes. And if there ever is another controversy, we can have a committee vote on the resolution no one person will bear the pushback if an a-hole decides to make a fuss.

This should be fun. I will volunteer to be on the committee if anybody can stand me.

Below was your response. You didn't argue. You just declined to do it. Too bad. There so many beautiful dishes served. Thankful for the people who went to the trouble of posting their own. Great food and great information.

Ah Dang Darla, sad to see you toss in the apron on the challenges but I do thank you for your service. It takes time to mess with it all and keep up with it. Thank you for hosting and thanks to Jax for setting it off in the first place.

As for the issues... it's inevitable. The way I have always looked at this... it's a no-cost, no-prize, time-wasting event. Post what you want. Vote how you like. Highest number wins. Simple. Some get too bent out of shape on something that should just be fun. I for one liked the group post...and I would have kept it as a single entry unless someone did their own post like Ron n them. Who cares if everyone voted for it because it was more fun-looking than the best-looking single dish....again this is supposed to be for fun.

If it keeps going I'll keep participating when I have the time and at the fusing that will likely still continue. If it doesn't it will be another chapter in the book called Life.

Keep my name out ya mouth.

I wasn't going to post rice and beans in a challenge but they were definitely better than your shitty arse peanuts.

ETA Darla thank you for handling these challenges.

Thank you, Darla. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed by me.

For what it's worth, I didn't see you being the a-hole one bit. There were indeed a group of posters who shite all over the thread and disrespected you and the process. It's plain as day in the thread.
