A lot of us here are the opposite. People already know who we are, so if we did something recognizable, it would get brought here even if we didn’t want it to.

Depends. Is it something minor that will disappear in a few weeks, or is there monetary compensation behind it? If you figure out the Zodiac Killer, you better believe I am going to cash out. Books, movies, interviews, etc. And after making a ton of cash, I'll do like the smart ones do, and just fade away into obscurity. After a few years, you may get a few people who recognize you, but most wont.
