Has there been a measurable increase in security / drop of crime rates in these areas?

Designating an area as extra crime free necessarily means leaving other areas as preferred for criminal exploits.

it'll pass and if they can they'll take the money and spend it on something unrelated to the district for which it was intended

No they won’t take this tax money. They’ll take the non dedicated tax money and spend it elsewhere.

I think there is one in the Gardere area that a large slumlord runs like a fiefdom. I don't think it works very well.

I think the legislative auditor would have something to say about that

Poster above got it correct. The money will go to patrols but then the city will take the pre-existing funds and move them to committees and working lunches. The level of increased police presence will be zero.

Shenandoah has one and it seems like there are burglaries all the time, although they all seem to occur at the northern end of the neighborhood. However, ticketing people for going 5 over has increased ten fold, so good to see that money is being put to good use.

I would donate 50 dollars of my monthly pay for 10 years of they would tear down Gardere and make it into something I purposely do not avoid.

Evidently, the EBRSO that built the substation across from Gardere has done very little in terms of crime prevention, maybe response times have been faster, but that’s about it.

The hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on shot spotter technology hasn’t kept violent criminals from killing people. Hell, someone was shot to death sleeping inside their car a few weeks ago. Hermitage is a lost cause, the criminal element does not fear the police or facing a 2nd degree murder rap, with the possibility of going to prison for life.

Our neighborhood has a "civic corporation" that owns some assets (lighting along roadways, signs, gardens, etc) and has some restrictive covenants that are very hard to enforce (they are attached to the deeds, however, the only remedy is through the parish code enforcement office). They also do some events throughout the year such as an easter egg hunt, kids parade, etc. It's basically a half-arse poorly designed HOA. It charges annual dues of $50, however, the dues are voluntary.

There has been some talk among some of the people in charge, about trying to do one of these protection/improvement districts. Basically as a way to get more patrols in the area, and have a mandatory annual fee (apparently it's easier to create a new district, than it is to amend these crappy covenants to make dues mandatory).

The big reason this idea hasn't moved forward, is because many of us believe that the regular patrols we get would just get moved to another area when we start hiring our own patrols. Thus, no real improvement.

Some of those 4-plexes along Gardere should be condemned

I live in one and it’s been very positive. We have cameras at all entrances with license plate readers plus marked LEOs patrolling.

If you look on a crime map we have noticeably less (virtually none) crime compared to surrounding neighborhoods. Some of the surrounding neighborhoods are quite more expensive than mine with no CBD.

The taxes you are already paying were always supposed to be partially for police patrols and crime prevention. Understand that the government is a business, always hungrier for more profit, always scheming new ways to dig in your pocket, while actually providing less.

Ask the people of St. George how much they received in services for each dollar they paid in taxes. St. George is no longer available so the others in BR will be forced to fund the bullshite, and thieving.

This seems like a ridiculous money grab. Your taxes are already paying for this.

Do these taxes apply only to the people living in these areas or is this city/parish wide?
