Some kind of monster re-mix

Minus the awful sound production this album is actually pretty fricking good. Better than the Loads, re-Loads and any other recent crap they have put out.

If Bob Rock had kept the same sound as he did for all of other albums that he produced with them, especially the Black Album, it would have come across totally different. At that time the band was in flux & just wanting to shake things up. The snare drum sound in that album is just awful. Beyond horrible.

Black Album was not very good and was the beginning of the end of Metallica making good music. It was also what blew them up to megastars, since they learned how to make pop metal songs that sell.

I think Load is super underrated. It’s just not a metal album. St Anger not only had production issues but it was plagued by repeating the same sections and grinding on the same riffs for 30 minutes at a time. It also had lyrics written by committee for the first time in the band’s history which is why you get such gems as “my life style determines my death style” and “Fran tic tic tic tic tic tic toc!” But there definitely
are some redeeming qualities. I think sweet amber isn’t terrible.

I agree with everything except that it wasn’t very good.

How can such a good band have such shite production at times?

More unpopular Metallica opinion:

Bob Rock is the worst thing that ever happened to Metallica.

I must be in the minority but I liked Death Magnetic. Think it was a solid album. Metallica hardly plays anything from that album.

Their "radio edit" version of SKOM is so much better and listenable than the original it's not funny. If the entire album sounded like this and the songs were half the length, it would totally be thought of differently

I always wondered if someone other than Metallica had put St. Anger out, an up and coming band, if it would have been received well.

I was 10-11 when it came out and I remember enjoying the cover art and a few songs: St. Anger, SKOM, Sweet Amber, Frantic, Invisible Kid.

It’s not great, but it’s far from unlistenable. Snare drum sounds like trash and the lyrics are weak. It’s an unfinished demo made on a ProTools rig - that’s how I look at it.

The DVD they put out of them performing the album live in the studio is really pretty frickin good. The Unnamed Feeling has always had a soft spot for me and Hetfield sounded really strong on those performances. Guitars sounded thick, the drums were normal, and Rob was playing bass obviously better than Bob. Just goes to show how much production can make or break an album

ETA: this guy has a really cool channel where he plays "what if this song was on a different album" versions through the IRs of the different albums. This is a medley of St. Anger stuff through The Black Album sound

Megadeth”s body of work is greater than Metallica. Especially when you factor in Mustaine’s influence on the early albums.

Joey Jordison was the best drummer to ever be in that band

St. Anger is their best album. The rest of their stuff is cliched teenage boy fanzine drivel.

Right. "Pop metal" songs like My Friend of Misery and The God That Failed - both of which are 100X better than anything Tool ever thought about doing.

Yes, there are 4-5 great songs on it.

Load is absolutely great. Ronnie is a sneaky Top 5 effort. Think about the difference between Bleeding Me and Mama Said - yet both are incredible.

Death Magnetic marked the moment Metallica actually "sold-out," as they stopped making the music they wanted to make and bowed to what the fans were asking for.

They've been a nostalgia act ever since, something Hetfield and Ulrich pooh-poohed extensively in the press during the Load era.

I no longer look forward to their new releases, as their days of challenging and surprising listeners are long gone.

Metallica are content with playing the hits from here on out. They're complacent. Stagnant.
