How did you guys feel about the mystery around the Dragon's identity? For me obviously knowing I felt like they sort of gave Rand big main character energy (the outburst against Moiraine for example), and my wife's first guess as to who it was was Rand, though she's now thinking it might still be Nynaeve ('did she lie about her age?!') or Egwene.

My wife figured right away it was Rand, because he looked different than the rest. Then she lost interest.

Just wanted to check before reading if this is going to have spoilers for future books?

I took the thread title to mean all book spoilers were fair game, I know I've mentioned things in my previous posts that are definitely beyond book 1.

If someone clarifies I'll be happy to edit / remove as necessary if that's the case.

I asked mine to watch it with me. She made it 10 minutes before falling asleep. To be fair, she's 8 months pregnant, but I was hoping she could last longer. I don't think high fantasy is her thing, though. She did wake up as Perrin drove an axe into his wife's stomach, though. It was quite the mood change from before she fell asleep.

Yeah, this sort of show is not my wife's thing at all... but she wanted to give it a shot. She watched a good bit of the first episode but definitely made it clear I could keep watching the rest without her.

She definitely asked early on if the diversity in Emond's Field was significant... I was like... uh... only one person's diversity is significant.

my wife will normally nerd out and/or humor me on fantasy shows.

she wouldn't do GoT with me till season 7, and that was only because she kept seeing Khaleesi girl power montage videos on facebook and asked if she was a major character. i said yes and she agreed to binge. so we knocked out 6 seasons in a few weeks.

she then did locke and key, carnival row, and shadow and bone, which are a lot more tame, but she really enjoyed them. witcher was a bit harder because i didn't know the source material that well myself and the pacing/timelines were confusing for us both. she bailed after the second episode (Geralt and the Elves and Yennifer's back story.)

I kept going and figured out the timeline, explained, and convinced her to finish it and she loved the last couple of episodes.

so i'm hopeful here, but i feel like i might have to take 10 minutes mansplain Lews Therin, Breaking of the World, the Dark One, Aes Sedai, Dragon Reborn, False Dragons, etc. to keep her interested.

I did not explain Dune to her and she lost interest and fell asleep in the theater before we even saw a sandworm.

Yeah same here but wanted to clarify, I'll just steer clear of the thread then. Thanks

i interpret this thread to be any and everything is on the table as far as book spoilers and am treating it as such.

i'm policing myself in the MTV board thread.

Watching with mine tonight. Glad I already saw it so I can be prepared to explain. She will ask a ton of questions.

Don't remember who said it earlier in the thread, but wanted to disagree... There will be very very few book readers who "drop" the show, or stop watching. They just won't. They will continue to watch simply to point out the things that they hate. It was exactly the same with Thrones.

What you have to be concerned about is non readers losing interest, period. They will solely determine if there's anything beyond 3 seasons.

I finished the 3rd episode this morning and while I have a lot of criticisms I'm going to keep watching as it does have some positives and I'm hoping it will get better as we get into the meat of the story.

Pros: The actors for Mat, Nynaeve, Fain, and Valda. All great choices so far. I like Mat's backstory change because I think coming from such a bad family life helps explain his carefree nature in later books. The look of the Fade.

Cons: Egwene, I won't harp on it because I've complained enough prior to the show starting but I just don't like the actress. The White Cloak telling Moiraine to find an Aes Sedai to heal her and that the dragon could be born as a man or woman. That last one makes absolutely no sense because if that was true they would kill every single channeler both male and female. It's obvious Rand will still be the Dragon but it's just such a nonsensical idea.

Since no one else has said it, I thought they absolutely nailed Thom Merrilin.

He might be the best book to screen representation in the show so far.

Cons: Egwene,

Have to agree with this. This is the only piece of casting that hasn't worked so far. She's supposed to be pretty... and the actress just isn't.

It's a shame the guy playing Mat won't be back, I like him. Hopefully whoever they get in his place is just as good.

agreed, I'll admit getting goosebumps when I saw the flash of the multicolored patches under his coat and the silence in the bar as he was singing about Lews Therin Telamon.

I really thought they showed him taking the sword... but maybe I'm getting that mixed up with them emphasizing the heron mark when Tam first brought it out.

My friend who introduced me to the books back in the 90s made it 15 minutes and was FURIOUS and claims he will not watch another second. I mean he was absolutely pissed at the changes.

But once he saw the cast way back when he had already decided he was going to hate it.

Yeah, some people don't want to be happy.

They also had these big name actor types in their head playing these roles, when thats just not going to happen.

I noticed another change compared to the books. Obviously, Logaine in the cage is introduced way earlier and in a different location. The one thing that stood out to me was Logaine looking beaten. In book 1, Rand can't believe how triumphant he looks while being paraded around in a cage.

Everyone has their own tastes, but I dont get the Egwene hate. The actress is being de-glammed because she is a Two Rivers farmgirl, not a runway model. But if you watch any of her promotional stuff, she is gorgeous in real life.

Also thought she was great at playing Egwene which is the first priority.

What are peoples thoughts on Darkfriend Leila? There was a screengrab floating around that does show Leila with the hammer raised above her head as if to attack when Perrin turns around and guts her. Could be Perrin's taveren nature saving him. Wouldnt make much sense though unless we are going to get more in the form of flashbacks.

First off, seeing names like Raistlin and Rand al Thor in the thread is making the book nerd in me happy...

I watched a vid (Dusty Wheel I think) where the guy put forth that theory of Perrin's wife being a darkfriend... and I gotta say I like it. Would explain her strange / annoyed looking behavior before the attack. Went back and watched and she certainly had the hammer raised - its definitely not the craziest WoT theory I've read before. Plus that would give him some additional reasoning to get over his guilt if he finds out that she was on the other team

Agreed. Saw the Dusty Wheel live stream thing as well, was really fun.

Yeah, Leila's behavior made no sense even before the attack. Perrin goes to the forge and hugs her, she seems completely disinterested. Then he tells her he loves her, and she does not say it back, I think she just says "I know."

But again, for this to make sense and be worthwhile, we would have to have flashbacks to further explore their relationship.
