re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
Yeah still plenty of lead male characters in regular fantasy. I will say urban fantasy is overrun with the main female wiseass character. Also young adult fantasy is pretty saturated with main female characters and "box checking" overall....

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
Fair enough. Not surprised I'm on an island with Dresden Files. I tend to look at urban fantasy series much differently than other series. Especially the longer ongoing ones. Little things start to bug me and add up over the course of the series, and I end up losing interest. That said, I maint...

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
Fully agree that it was nice not to have pages of descriptive nonsense that just clutters the novel. I gotta decide whether or not to fully commit back to Dresden Files. I followed along through like 10-11 books but thought the series was dropping significantly whether due to Butcher's getting t...

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
Anyone read The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlmann I think his name is? Relatively recent release. I thought it was really good, particularly the way the dialogue flowed at times from the main character. I think its the start of an ongoing series though, so theres that....

re: Wheel of Time TV, (first official poster) - Raistlins Apprentice
On the subject of Rand and his romantic trio, has there been any confirmation of how the show is handling that? I know they said they were doing away with the stupid foursome romance, but what then? Are they picking one and going all in with her and Rand, or are they doing some weird one by one pr...

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
Yeah, the books are generally in the YA genre so the teen romance vibes are strong, especially in the original trilogy. The two duologies are more "adult" oriented but still carry some ya dna since most of the characters are still teenagers or early twenties....

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
Just finished running through all 7 books in the Grishaverse. I thought they were enjoyable for the most part. The Shadow and Bone Trilogy were the weakest overall, particularly the first book, the middle of book two, and the beginning of book three. The Six of Crows duology I had read before, ...

re: Wheel of Time TV, (first official poster) - Raistlins Apprentice
So does anyone have an updated timeline in terms of the show actually dropping? Is it supposed to be by year's end or has it been pushed into next year?...

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
This would be a fun exercise, though probably with a lot of disagreement. For instance, I would not have Martin anywhere near these trophies. I think Anthony Ryan gets the GOAT fantasy series after 1 book as that was the best first novel I ever read. Then things went haywire. After that it g...

re: Wheel of Time TV, (first official poster) - Raistlins Apprentice
POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW: Has there been any word or speculation on how they are handling the "tameness" of the books in regards to the sex stuff? I had thought it would be a good idea to have Rand and Egwene already together as opposed to Rand remaining a virgin till Aviendha like...

re: Survivor Spinoff(SPOILERS!!!) - Best Players To Never Win - Raistlins Apprentice
Only seen the first 20 seasons but here are the ones I'd consider from those that werent already listed: 1) Rob Cesternino (Amazon) brought strategy to the forefront of an entire season and constantly hopped alliances riding all the way to the final 3; would have won but for Jenna's immunity win ...

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
Anyone here read the Baru books by Seth Dickinson? Just started the first one, The Traitor Baru Cormorant, and its really intriguing so far. Curious if the series holds up. Also curious if the 3 books are a complete series or if its going to be a longer ongoing one....

re: Beginner Survivor seasons question (No spoilers) - Raistlins Apprentice
So I went through this very recently, ultimately binging through the first half of the series (seasons 1-20). Had never really watched the show live so maybe that skews my take but here is what I would say regarding the first 20: Best season: Heroes vs Villians (20) Not much more to add as its ...

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
I feel like Blood Song should almost be required reading for any fantasy fan. Its that good. And the second book isnt terrible, its just kind of the typical middle book lull. The third book is an outright disaster, no avoiding that. But I think the decent fourth book and the really good fifth bo...

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
Just got around to finishing the latest Anthony Ryan book, I thought it was really good. Quick question if anyone knows: is Ryan continuing the series or will he be launching something else next? I could see it going either way based on the ending....

re: Wheel of Time TV, (first official poster) - Raistlins Apprentice
Oh ok. Yeah I get how people can be frustrated by casting choices dictated entirely by race or gender, but everything I've read has pointed to these castings being generally about talent first and foremost. Which makes sense because if this show is going to make it long term, the younger cast has ...

re: Wheel of Time TV, (first official poster) - Raistlins Apprentice
Wait what is the hardcore SJW stuff? I thought we had mostly avoided anything too terrible. Did someone confirm one of those horrible predictions about the Whitecloaks being used as a Klan substitute?...

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
Just finished the first 2 books in the Sun Eater series by Christopher Ruocchi. First book was kind of disappointing. It had a similar structure to Blood Song by Anthony Ryan and other recent books where the story is being told from the future and various exciting developments are teased, but the ...

re: Wheel of Time TV, (first official poster) - Raistlins Apprentice
I didn't realize this was somewhat in question. Egwene is my second favorite character in the series, and I'd argue she actually has the best character arc of anyone. I just hope we can make it to the end of book 6. I don't think making the entire series is realistic without way too much change...

re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread - Raistlins Apprentice
I enjoyed both the Mithermages trilogy and the Pathfinder trilogy. Also have one of his recent works Lost and Found, but haven't got around to it yet. I'm 4/5th through the Dark Apostle series by E. C. Ambrose. Really weird, unique stuff. But maybe a bit too much of the whiny morality that som...
