How important are snow tires?

For those who lived in the north, how important are snow tires/chains? Just moved to Boston and had never driven in snow before. My current car has AWD

If you use Nitrogen you can really go with or without them. If you’re going factory air I would use them for sure.

I have a small FWD car and they make a huge difference. My wife’s AWD SUV just has all seasons and they work fine.

You'll be fine, even in Burlington. I haven't had snow tires in the 8 years I've been here and it's never been an issue. In the larger cities, they are EXTREMELY efficient about plowing the interstates and major roadways. You'll see plows out mid-storm all over.
Unless you plan on going into small mountain towns during or immediately after a major blizzard, AWD is all you need.

Since you have no idea how to drive in snow put winter tires on your AWD so you don't kill those of us that know what we are doing.

Snow tires are more more useful than 4WD. They allow you to accelerate and brake normally. You can drive at roughly normal speeds safely.
I’d be surprised if most people in Boston had snow tires. I didn’t have a car when I lived there, but I don’t remember friends having snow tires. Most people in Maine didn’t have them either.
They are really nice though. If you do get them, buy Nokians. They’re vastly better than any other snow tire on the market.
Studies say that studs are only useful on ice, and to skip them. I do like studs better though.
Just personal experience.

If in well-traveled areas, you may rarely drive in much snow. As a previous poster mentioned, they plow their asses off.
I worked for a Boston-based company for years and never drove in more than modest snow, they were constantly plowing.
Just make sure you have decent tread on your tires and don't drive like an a-hole.

My all terrains are severe snow rated.

I live in Colorado and I can tell you that snow tires are a must during the winter. Thankfully, snow melts pretty quickly here because it's usually not the heavy wet snow that you find in the northeast and midwest.

Boston you won't need anything more than an AT type or all season tire.
I have good AT Tires and 4x4 on my truck and only chain up in the mountains.

I was stationed in NY and CT while in the Navy and currently live in MI. I have never once used snow tires or chains on any vehicle.
The situations where you might need them are likely to be very limited, but there is also no reason not to throw on snow tires if it makes you more comfortable driving.

Depends on how much you drive - my commute is 50 mi - ya it sucks- and I put snow tires on a subaru for the commute. When I had a 10 min commute I didnt need them.
There is a noticeble difference between all seasons and snow tires in traction/stopping on snowy surfaces

If you live in Boston city limits I wouldn’t worry about it, it’s better to take the T anyway
