You are probably right, but it doesn't hurt to swing for the fences twice before laying down a 2 strike single.

Chris Petersen is not coaching right now, yet the timing filter missed him in your final list.
I don't know enough about why he truly stepped aside after 2019 season. Burned out? Why?

Urban Meyer stepped aside for two years and then came back. So, I guess it is possible. And he knows Scott Woodward. Hmmm...

PS - I just added him to the OP.

They look great running through a cupcake conference with a strong offense and nobody fielding anything that resembles a defense.

When they have to play big boy football their lack of being able to recruit a top level talent on both sides of the ball gets exposed.

Thanks for the summary, I've been walking down a similar listing myself. Though I do actually think SW pulls someone that many people thought was unattainable or just didn't expect.

My lists: Rankings are in Tiers, no inner tier rankings (ie: Kelly = Riley, etc..)
Tier A - Steals/HRs some may be extremely unlikely
Luke Fickell - Really want to see this one
Brian Kelly - More resources at LSU an actual legit shot at Playoffs. Does he actually want the challenge though?
Chris Peterson - Link to Woody, but is currently an Athletics Admin. Does he want back into coaching or keep his less stressful Admin role
Lincoln Riley - Very Good coach, not strong on Defense though...might jump ship to better campus before Oklahoma enters SEC?
Mario Cristobal - Very Good, but not leaving Nike Money in Oregon unless he wanted a challenge

Tier B - Good Hires/but not a splash
Dave Aranda - Not leaving Baylor just getting started
Billy Napier - Good, not a big enough hire for Woodward unless he strikes out across the board.
Jamey Chadwell - same as Napier not a big enough hire for Woodward
Matt Campbell - Culture challenge... LSU is usually a 3 and done. This guys wants full 4 year commitment...He might struggle with recruiting and reloading BC of this. But I think it would be a good but painful change.
P.J. Fleck - History of reloading and bringing mid/low -tier to competitors for conference titles.
Paul Chryst - Long-term success but up against the OH machine... might be out of nowhere.
Kyle Whittingham -Long-term PAC-12 success but a defensive guy... might be out of nowhere.

Tier F - Underachievers/Sinking ships/Red Flag issues.
Lane Kiffin - Don't understand this one. Too many red flags and similar to O off the field issues.
Jimbo Fisher - Too Expensive, mediocre results
Kendall Briles - Really? we currently have title 9 issues already....
Herm Edwards - Arizona State
Gary Patterson - TCU, already on a sinking ship... TCU is a mess these past 5 years
Tom Herman - lol NO... if TEXAS was a bust, he can't make it in Big boy town...
Bill O’Brien - See Doug... Would have a good offense though as long as that was the only thing he did.
James Franklin - Not sure why people like this one alot; but has had success

Tier Not involved at all --- I don't think any NFL coaches are legitimate candidates.
Mark Stoops - Ironic as he is at UK....
Doug Pederson - NFL coach... not a good fit as he'll jump ship quickly if he has success
Bob Stoops - Already retired and in the TV booth..not a candidate
Matt Rhule - See Doug
Joe Brady

You know when you really think about it, LSU is heading into uncharted waters. We have never truly KNOWINGLY hired a "big fish" as a head football coach.

Maybe this is the time.

Was he really a bust at Texas?

Charlie Strong was 16-21 (0.432) at Texas and 5-7 his last year.
Herman went 32-18 (0.640) and won 4 straight bowl games.
Herman is replaced by Sarkisian who is currently 4-3 (0.571)

The optics are not right for LSU to hire him, but I still think Herman is a hell of a football coach. I also think he would have been incredibly successful here if LSU had gotten him the first time.

A&M has been a middle of the pack SEC team since they joined except for last year when they had tons of seniors in a weird COVID year. Yeah this year they beat Bama but they also have lost two games already.

Yeah I don’t think we’ve heard the last of Herman

Texas fired him too soon

No chance LsU hires him (as you said the optics would look terrible), but I think he’s a good coach and will eventually get another semi-big job somewhere and do well

Why is Bob Stoops dismissed so easily? He was coaching xfl last season, so clearly he wasnt done when we thought he was. Stoops left OU while still in his prime and all Riley did was maintain it. I think he's a decade younger than Saban, and he's the only guy on that whole list in the same league as Saban and Urban. Bob should get a call to determine his interest before moving down the list. He could begin recruiting immediately while O finishes out the season, similar to what Urbs did at tOSU. That's the swinging for the fences hire i expect out of Woodward and what we should expect at LSU. He made 5.5 million his last season at OU, make him turn down 9.

Hey, Chicken. I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, but don’t you think Woodward has considered this? It doesn’t appear that he panic-fired O; it actually kind of seems like the opposite. I feel like he’s planned around the timing of it all, and had a plan in place for when to precisely pull the cord on O. Of course, you’d assume he did this with the intention of timing it with one of the best coaches on his list. Thoughts?

Disagree, he didn't handle the stress of being the Head Coach at the a major University very well. You could just look at him and tell how much the stress was affecting his health. He appearance and demeanor changed drastically in 4 years and looked like a deer in the head lights when the media asked tough questions.

He will always be a great o coordinator or head coach at a less stressful situation, but he wouldn't have been successful at LSU.

My same takeaway. All the white whale, big fish talk is BS. The "I have sauces" talk is BS. The poster claiming Riley is sitting on an offer is BS.

A good portion of the fanbase will be deeply disappointed when LSU hires a lower level coach. Chicken is letting people know that's what's going to happen.

OU was a tad on the decline at the tail-end of his tenure. At a minimum, even if it wasn’t a “decline” per se, Program had gotten somewhat stale and slipped a tad from consistent “Top5 truly competing for a national title” status. While Riley did certainly inherit a good/stable program, he has elevated it from where it was under Stoops.

Bob was 11-2 in last two seasons...finished season AP #5...never made the playoffs but still finished on high note.
