Depends on the swing speed of the player.

Do a virtual fitting with PXG website.
I’m sure Callaway and Taylor made have recs on their sites.

If he’s a big strong kid with high speed swing, needs stiff shafts.

Have him go to the range and try different friends clubs.

Rick Shields has done a few videos lately if these all in 1 sets. The Taylor made one looks interesting. It’s basically everything for around $1K

I got an entry level set of Tour Edge clubs that were just fine for a beginner. About $600 with a pretty nice bag.

Anything used. Club path is 99% of the equation.

I will loan you a set of ping g10s if you’d like something to work off of until you decide.

These are what I got my brother in law who is early 30’s and wants to start getting into golf.

I researched several beginner sets that were sub $500 and they were my favorite by far.

Warning though: he still sucks

Strata has everything you need, or just piece together a set of used game improvement clubs

Older model year Wilson Staff D series. Wilson Staff is an amazing bang for the buck, especially for their game improvement/beginner clubs.

$350 on their site, and the set has everything a beginner would need.

I wouldn't research too much on beginner sets. They're all going to be forgiving, and he's likely not going to be able to tell a huge difference.
