Anyone ever fish the borrow pits off of Hwy 28 east outside Pineville near Lake Catahoula?

No, but we fished the Mississippi River bar pits south of Vidalia when I was a little kid. Caught, and killed, so many gar in the bar pits, we called them gar pits! We knocked them in the head with a paddle, then put on gloves and broke their bottom jaw. Those bar pits were full of gar, Buffalo, Grinnel, Gaspergou, just about any trash fish you'd want to see.

I grew up in Pinevile and we called the big holes where they dug out gravel and sand "bar" pits.
I have no idea why. Some redneck probably misunderstood a word and it caught on to all rednecks and their offspring.
I learned some weird words from my north LA redneck parents.
They rurnt me good.

We called them bar pits, but my dad said that was redneck for borrow pit. As in they borrow the dirt from there to build up the bed for the nearby highway.
He always warned that they weren’t dug as ponds with a sloped bottom, so the depth is unpredictable. A kid can be wading knee deep fishing and then step off a damned underwater cliff and drown.

Did you ask your dad if they returned the dirt they borrowed?

The correct term is borrow pit.
Double check to see if they are on public or private property.
If private you will need permission from the land owner to fish them otherwise you are trespassing.
