If you grew up without a Dad or older brother, who is supposed to show you ? youtube sounds good until you have somekind of problem the person on youtube didn't have.

A wall fan control dimmer switch is so easy to replace, Cut power, hook up new on as the old one, power back on and save the labor cost.

On a side note have men today become so inept and Beta that they can't install a dimmer switch?

I think it often has a lot to do with their time vs money analysis. I know a lot of people capable of doing their own oil changes, cutting their grass, cleaning their house etc that prefer to pay for it vs spending the time doing it. There is very little I can't do around the house but if I have a fan motor go out in my air handler in August I am happy to pay for that to be done by someone else as long as they can get to it quickly.

Over time I have realized the real Alpha move is the ability to fix any problem with a check wrench. I don't do it often since I actually enjoy MOST household repairs but won't hesitate to pay someone if I would rather be doing something else.

I should have used this advice over the weekend. I wouldn't be treating poison ivy today.

What you haven't told us is HOW FAR OFF THE GROUND is the ceiling fan?
If it's a standard ceiling, reachable by the kind of ladder everybody handy would have in their garage, it's one thing.
But, if it's the ceiling fan in a cathedral ceiling room three stories high, that requires a heck of a ladder, I could see the charge going up. (My handyman hates ladders that tall and I'd never have that tall a room because of the problems with heating and ac ).

How do they gouge you when you agree to the price?

If you don’t like it or think it’s high, keep shopping

I've seen the room that it's in. Just a regular ol' bedroom, probably like a 7 foot high ceiling or less.

No, it wasn't high. That's the helpless fee.

OT Electricians - Was This Price A Tad High?
My cousin recently had to replace one of those ceiling fan wall control dimmer things, which got screwed up in a power surge after Ida (lights in the fan started going on/off like The Exorcist, etc.)

They replaced the exact same brand/model. The part was supplied for them. Total time spent was about 40 minutes.

Of course, no one wants to call them parasitic leeches that take advantage of people in the aftermath of a hurricane, no one's saying that at all.

But does this 40-minute job seem just a wee bit overpriced?

Yes, it is overpriced. Did the electrician show up with an iPad and all the new gadgets plumbers and electricians use? A simple service call with the part supplied should have run no more than 150.00 in my area. Not all markets are the same.

There is a small flaw with your thought.

Not many people would pay $385.00 for an oil change or their small yard cut.

I would argue you’re paying that amount because the electrician knows how to do it, safely, and having that skill set is in the pricing.

OK, maybe this was one of life's simplest pleasures, to be able to control the ceiling fan without getting out of bed.

Please don't say the wall switch was by the door into the bedroom?

Looks like this was done as part of an insurance claim? Did tour cousin have an estimate from the insurance company? If so I am betting they matches up pretty good

You’re paying for his ability to do that job in 40 minutes.

No idea on that. But it wasn't just the switch, it was putting the new receiver in the canopy part of the fan.
Still, all one thing, though.
