Man, when he's talking to Pharell about it and he plays the drum intro to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his thighs and then they cut to footage of The Gap Band on stage and it's the exact same beat, it warped my fragile little mind.
So, really, grunge is just disco without matching sequined jumpsuits.

No. Boy bands were almost completely fabricated, strangers for the most part, hand picked by management and put together.
I don’t think that was the case with any grunge band.
And changing one’s appearance slightly to suit what’s popular is a far cry from being fabricated or fake.
So, no. Disagree.

The whole grunge scene was super depressing comparing to coming out of 70’s & 80’s rock. That being said, a lot of those bands were incredibly talented to have come from just mostly just Seattle scene. It changed music forever and killed rock ultimately. Heavy guitar and drum mixed music still haven’t recovered.

If you’re asking if the producers and mixers heard the demo tapes and made a better product, yes that would be correct. Did the label piece together the band? No.

Grunge was punks finally admitting that 70s rock was awesome and not the enemy.
Side 2 of My War by Black Flag, which came out in 1984, was a big deal and a huge surprise because it was their version of Black Sabbath, slowed down and heavy, and if Black Flag did something that made it cool. But Henry Rollins wrote lyrics that were more tortured and depressive than Sabbath so that pretty much started grunge.

They are 1 of those bands that you can’t tie to a genre. They’re their own unique sound.
If we’re talking boy bandish rock, I’d say that it’s the rap metal in the late 90’s rather than grunge. Grudge was a good escape from the hair/glam metal. Hell, people are still out rocking Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and such. Their are some really iconic songs from that era. You don’t heard people still bumping to limp bizkit

Lollapalooza got them lumped. They toured with those acts as they were blowing up nationally. They were played on the same stations.
As already mentioned. The first few bands formed pretty organically. Then yes record companies stepped in and threw flannel on everything and Doc Martens. Many did start out as hair metal bands. These guys are older than most of the guys posting in this thread. I assume. They are all in their 50’s. Or would be if they lived. Their first groups they dabbled in were more metal and older punk. They later grew into their sounds. Tunings, amps, effects, writing. It all became dark and brooding more than screwing girls.
It was a great time to be alive for your ears. Your eyes? Not so much. Not nearly the number of hot groupies. Or women dressed like sluts.

Boy bands had a manager behind them who created them. Grunge bands did not. So it’s a stupid theory.

Your timelines must be way off. Facelift was released in 1990. Nevermind, and the media blitz of “Grunge” didn’t take off until 1991/1992.

ETA I understand that most of, if not all of the grunge era bands were not what they ended up being when they started.
But that goes for almost every single band ever.

First of fricking all, Pearl Jam (mlb) is not the same sound as AiC, is not the same sound as Nirvana, is not the same sound as Soundgarden.
So what the frick were they all told to sound like? Grunge? Grunge is a media term and its meaning isn’t defined by the music as much as the look and outlook of some of the bands. You keep saying it as though the music is the same. You couldn’t be more wrong.
