What coach O apparently doesn’t understand about 2019 offense

In 2019 we did not substitute much on offense. We left in our best players and let them play. Good things happen when you do this:
- your best players are on the field more often
- you don’t give the defense the opportunity to substitute.
- you find a rhythm. We need a rhythm.
Our coordinator and head coach need to learn this lesson. Bring in the second string in the fourth quarter when you have a big lead and let them get experience then, not before unless there is injury or other circumstances.

Lots of words when all you needed to say was everything.

So you know more than two coaches with 40 years experience coaching at the college and NFL level? OK

The difference is in 2019 we knew before the season started who the best players were.
This year, we have 4 freshman WR who are getting major game action for the first time in their careers. You need to be able to figure out who your best players are in an in game setting in order to play your best players.
Against Texas in 2019, we rotated our entire receiving corp out multiple times, played fournette and TDP a handful of snaps. Then when the starters stepped up, they rarely left the field after that game.
Hopefully the coaches can now see who their best guys are, and keep them in the game.

VERY good point. And you can still sub, just do it between drives.
We sub way too much. Way too much.

This didn't really begin until later in the season.
At this point in 2019 we still had Lanard Fournette getting reps.

It’s like people didn’t watch the game Saturday. Were the majority of LSU fans in a coma?

Agreed, and that will happen. However, it’s taking a few games for these people to assert themselves.

He doesn’t know who our best players are yet. He continues to play a guy at RB who has no business playing in the SEC.

I sure hope the Coaching staff reads this board or you have written him a letter.
Bunch of overpaid stiffs being paid millions when a simpleton on a bulletin board knows more about his team and the game of football.

To do that you need some level of experience from your skill guys. 2019 had a 5th year starting QB and 3 WRs with significant playing experience. With a guy at QB making what will be his 6th start and several true freshman at WR (many of whom didn't get significant playing time until the last game) it probably isn't that easy to replicate the efficiency of the 2019 group right now.
But more than that, Clyde was the reason LSU didn't have to sub. He was a weapon defenses had to account for as a receiver and could shift in to the backfield and be equally as effective as a runner. Opposing defenses don't fear TDP as a receiver. They know their LB or SS can cover him without issue. Maybe Kiner and/or Goodwin can develop into those guys, but the sample size is a bit too small to know that at the moment.
The offense "evolved" more this week with tempo...which led to success. Let's see if it continues to do so on Saturday.

The problem is we didnt know who the best players were going into this season like we did 2019. We have so many talented freshmen it's hard to really know how they will do until we get them on the field. In 2019, the only freshman who really played a lot was Stingley (Flott and Ika next up but with less than 250 snaps over a 15 game season, they were not starters or really big contributors), who joined the team early that year and everyone knew he would be one of the best DBs out the gate. We felt that way about Maason Smith this year probably, and hes gotten a lot of snaps in last few games and will continue going forward now as well.
I legitimately think they had no idea who the best guys would be at a lot of spots going into this season. Going into 2019 it was so set it stone at almost every position...we knew who the OL would be, we have no clue who that is really right now and still shuffling guys around in week 4 here. We knew CEH was the man at RB in 2019, this year they had to get things sorted out with Emery out and trying to get reps for the freshmen. In 2019 at WR it was no question who the top 3 guys were, along with Moss at TE. This year? Again, had to get the freshmen out there to see what they could do behind Boutte.
It's tough to know how most freshmen will be until you get them out there. Not every freshman you think will be great out the gate like Stingley, so you have to work them in and see how they respond. There is also a thing as playing too much youth and you'll simply see mistake after mistake early on because it is tough for someone who has only been around for a month or two to really pick up on everything. It's 1 thing to have a freshman starting here or there, it's another thing to have 6,7,8 freshmen out there starting.
This year was never going to be a great season, because we're figuring out a lot of our better players are in fact, the freshmen. And most of those guys unfortunately just take some time to ease in.

This has lots of merit. Flow abs keeping the defense winded and unable to adjust are important factors, as is optimizing the playmakers on the field throughout the game

O wants to mettle in this offense and shouldn’t that’s what he needs to understand.

Agree with the OP.
Won't be as absolute as in '19 but keep the substitutions to a minimum per possession.

In 2019 we knew who the best players were because they had established themselves the previous year. Joe had played almost every snap the year before, Jefferson was our best returning receiver, Chase was a sophomore, and Clyde was a Junior.
Now we have a lot of freshmen trying to break in the starting lineup. Not exactly the same thing.
