What is this? Nirvana was good before all the clods heard of them. Bleach was a great, raw album.

Nirvana is frozen in time. They never had the opportunity to jump the shark or make a shitty album.

I read this as Top 5 Canadians.

I can agree with that.

Clower was funny and his humor was clean. A family with kids could watch his show.

Holy shite that's really close.

Richard Pryor is vastly overrated. There's plenty that are vastly underrated. Anthony Jeselnik. Nick de Palo. Greg Giraldo. Etc

Without thinking too much about it, in no particular order and talkin stand up only since television is a completely different list...

George Carlin
Patrice O'Neal
Bill Burr
Mitch Hedberg
Louis C K

Ari has been an interesting guy to watch come up in comedy. His early stuff wasn't good at all, but he kept working. He hung out with and talked to so many good comedians. He wrote all the time and took as much stage time as he could get. It has paid off, and he's gotten better and better.

Ari, as he himself will admit, is just an all around awful person. Ari once drugged his friend Bert Kreischer with molly at his own house in front of his wife and kids. And Ari has said he doesn’t feel remotely bad about it, and Bert’s wife (rightly) won’t go anywhere near Ari or let Ari anywhere near their house or kids anymore after that. All that being said, Ari is hilarious.

Murphy was hilarious but his material isn't as timeless, go back and watch his two big specials, they aren't near as funny today as they were back then. That's important to me when doing an all-time great list. I love Eddie, but he isn't top 5.

Agree 100% And I've always said the same thing about Richard Pryor. They both just engaged in toilet humor and didn't actually have that great of a delivery and their material wasn't that smart or surprising. They were basically just the shock jocks of comedy.

I think the people that disagree with you are just suffering from Golden Age syndrome. They're remembering how funny they thought those guys were with their simplistic dirty jokes when they were 10 years old. Go back and listen to their stand up now and it doesn't stand the test of time. Not like a Mitch Hedberg or Patrice O'Neal or Rodney Dangerfield or George Carlin

Dave Attell

He has some great stand up. Criminally underrated. But I think he really nailed it in the TV format he did with Insomniac. Him walking around late at night freelancing with people in bars suited his comic style so perfectly. He's what you call naturally funny. He doesn't really need to write material. Just put him in the right situation and funny just flows out of him. He has a ton of respect among his peers because of that but the general public doesn't really know him.

Top 10 would include Redd Foxx

Hell yeah. One of the few and I mean very few, that was funny both in his stand-up bits and in his television show. Also, one of the few that stands the test of time

Best by class:

One-liner: Steven Wright

Clean: Brian Regan (I don’t like Gaffigan when he drops into “audience voice” mid-joke)

Story Teller: Chapelle

Dirty: Atell

Offensive: Jeselnik

Observational: Carlin

…..

The ????? style: Norm

That's a really great way to break it down and I probably agree with your selections

I will say, most of the names I would bring up have already been mentioned, but one name I don't think I've seen in this thread yet is Daniel Tosh. Even if you don't like Tosh.0, his stand ups are gold
