Bill Cosby really stands head and shoulders above everyone else when it comes to sticking with a bit.

For example pretending to be America's dad for decades while he was raping dozens of women.

Worst gimmick a comic ever had.

Hedberg, Patrice, and Giraldo all had such a great delivery. Lost way too soon. I loved listening to those guys. Norm's delivery was on another level.

That’s the point. He was so good that he would take dad jokes from the 1940’s and make them funny just to prove that he could. His “intangibles” (which is 80% of what makes comedy funny) were so elite and refined that he could turn something as basic and predictable as a joke about moths and light into something legitimately special and fresh.

But that’s my point, he’s not funny in the traditional sense. I didn’t find his standup particularly good for this very reason….the timing and presentation only gets him so far, eventually it actually needs to be funny.

I loved Norm in his scripted roles, be it on SNL, that sitcom he had, and many of the other movies/shows he appeared on. He also had an incredibly quick wit making him great on talk shows, podcasts, or working crowds.

But standup, which is what I think of when someone says “comedian”, nah, not that high on the list. To me, he’s similar to guys like Belushi, Farley, Carrey, etc….”funny guys” but not what I consider to be comedians.

Had you read my first post, I explained why I think comedians appreciated him far more than regular people who watch standup comedy.

My top 5:

Robin Williams
George Carlin
Richard Pryor
Eddie Murphy
Rodney Dangerfield

Norm is close. Like 6-8. I love him, but I can't put him above the others.

I have talked to stand up comedians and they have the greatest respect for comedians who make people laugh without going blue. Basically they feel that anyone can make people laugh by going blue, but the greatest get people to laugh without going blue.

I think image-wise the Blue Collar Comedy deal hurt him more than helped him. It made him a boatload of money and changed his life, but from a public perception perspective it kind of put him in a niche market that he's spent some time getting out of. He's underrated as a joke writer, for sure.

That makes sense.

My wife's grandmother used to just call him White... no Ron, like he was Bach or something. I got a kick out of that.

I think Robin was a better performer than he was an actual comedian.

Raw opinion here. Robin Williams stand up was not that great. Just some dude that binged coke.

Norm was my all time favorite comedian. I watched all his terribly reviewed shows. If it had norm, I was there. He was just my sort of comedy. His delivery was so nuanced that you really couldnt tell if the sequence was a troll or if there was an actual joke there.

Norm isn't for everyone though and thats why I'd never put him on some all-time list. Norm never tried to be that.

The mark of true comedic genius is how much they empower others:

1. Ellen
2. Whoopi
3. Tig
4. Kathy Griffin
5. Schumer

6 pages in and no Sam Kinison? Maybe I missed it but just surprised he’s not even on a list.

Ari Shaffir

Ari has been an interesting guy to watch come up in comedy. His early stuff wasn't good at all, but he kept working. He hung out with and talked to so many good comedians. He wrote all the time and took as much stage time as he could get. It has paid off, and he's gotten better and better.

His two-part special was pretty good, and he was so damn happy when he sold it to Netflix. It sucked, though, because it cost him his Comedy Central show "This is not Happening" which he created, pitched, and got signed himself. He managed that show and hosted it. I still wish he was doing it.

A top 5 comedians list must have Jonathon Winters .

ETA: and probably should have Robin Williams.

But definitely Winters. He had the quickest wit of any comedian ever.
