I love Norm but not sure if he makes my top 5 for SNL comedians.
1. Chris Farley
2. David Spade
3. Eddie Murphy
4. Kevin Nealan
5. Norm Macdonald
No Chevy Chase, Belushi or Murray?? What kind of list is this?

I think it would be more fair to separate it by era. You can't compare the old school guys to the middle school guys to the new school guys.
Also- Steve Martin was a great comedic actor and writer but he does not belong in a list of great standup comedians.
My list is in no particular order, all of a similar time-
Brian Regan
Norm McDonald
Bill Burr
Louis CK
Chris Rock
Bonus: Bill Hicks

Not sure I would call it top 5 or even top 5 on SNL but he had a unique style for sure and no one was like him before or will be after.
His roles in movies never really panned out either

Respect Carlin but just not my thing
Carlin’s last 10-15 years were terrible. But, he was phenomenal for so long that everyone tends to overlook/ignore/forgive how bad he became.

Murphy was hilarious but his material isn't as timeless, go back and watch his two big specials, they aren't near as funny today as they were back then. That's important to me when doing an all-time great list. I love Eddie, but he isn't top 5.

Carlin wasn't hilarious, but he spoke truth. His humorous takes on society were awesome, whether hilarious or not.

Because he's not an actor, he's a standup comedian.

For me he is grossly over rated

Steve Martin?

You can't write a History of stand-up comedy or of American Comedy in general from 1950-2000 without prominently including Steve Martin.
The OP says Top 5 Comedians

I did not grow up in that era of SNL.

Those 3 specials have aged like fine wine. Yes, they are more philosophical sermons than standup, but funny as frick nonetheless. If you watch his last three specials and then look around you, you have to think he was onto something. All three should be preserved in the Library of Congress (as should his 7 Dirty Words special, but that went up to the Supreme Court and has been preserved) so future historians understand how we got here now.

If you want him to be in the discussion, then he's in the discussion.

Hate to say it, but I never found Norm that funny. Just not the type of humor I can get into I guess.

That's how I feel about Mitch Hedberg, and Steven Wright, even though they were both one-liner comedians like Norm, I just never found Mitch that funny. Reading his jokes is funnier than watching him deliver them, which is not good for a standup comedian.

Norm is one of those comedians that people either like or don't. He doesn't have a typical comic style but he did what he did very well and could bludgeon a laugh out of a crowd.
