Why isn't Texas more known for beaches?

I was looking at the maps on the Tropical Storm Nicholas thread. Texas has a heck of a lot of coastline.
You hardly ever hear about Texas when beaches are discussed, though. Other than maybe a mention of South Padre or Galveston once in a blue moon, Texas beaches seem to be off the radar. Florida and California seem to get all the mentions.
Is it that the Texas coastline doesn't produce a lot of beaches? That they are too far from any state but Texas, or something else?

Brown sand and water are ugly.

Because they’re disgusting

Have you been to Galveston Beach? It's more like packed mud than sand and the water resembles that of Biloxi.

Litter everywhere. Messy, cans. It’s illegal and no one cares.

I guess no one has ever gone to the beaches in Texas to see if they are worth going to.
Maybe you've discovered a hidden gem.
I guess all the people from Texas and LA that visit the area between Gulf Shores and Panama City every year just really like being on absurdly overcrowded beaches.

The only beach worth a crap is S Padre
I know people that swear by Galveston and I don’t get it. I’d rather drive a little further and have white sand and clear water
Galveston is like the Louisiana beaches

Mud for sand and dirty brown water.

Outside of South Padre there is nothing to talk about.

I mean, it is a perfectly fine place to run away to if you live in Houston.
But it isn't some pristine tourist destination at all, in my opinion. The whole feel of the place hasn't been the same since Ike.

This. Galveston is trash.
We did Cinnamon Shores in Port A last year and it was pretty nice. Not quite SPI level but definitely the best of Port A. The resort/neighborhood itself probably outshined the beaches themselves but we enjoyed staying there compared to any other places I’ve stayed in Texas.

Blame the Mississippi River. Satellite views of the Gulf routinely show the sediment flow that typically flow out from the Gulfport area to Corpus Christi and it is a major factor in the brown water.

1hr drive vs 7+ hr drive. It’s not really a weekend getaway option unless you’re flying.

Not exactly but pretty close.
We went to Kemah/Galveston area this past summer. The allure definitely is not the beaches. We stayed at a house on the Bay a little south of Kemah. It had a pier into the bay with lights for night fishing which was incredible....my nephew caught one of the biggest specs I've ever seen personally and I've fished a good bit out of Venice and Grand Isle.
We did other things that were fun for the kids but honestly it was a pretty relaxing 5 night getaway. I'd do it again. We rented a boat one day and scooted around Clear Lake and Galveston bay....that's when we did most of the swimming. There was a swimming hole in the Clear Lake area that was filled with boats....it was pretty fun everyone was swimming, drinking, partying, and playing music. The kids loved it.

My great-grandmother immigrated from Ireland and settled in Galveston 6 months before that storm made landfall.
Great timing.

I go to Galveston A LOT! Because it is 30 minutes from my house! It’s nasty, dirty, seaweed everywhere…but the kids love it. And I’m down for free entertainment, plus playing with the kids on ANY beach is good memories. Cheap family fun is great, but it is NOT a nice beach.
