Fence blown down between neighbors

The fence is on his property and the “good” side faces him. It blew down in the storm.
Neighbor calls me and is angling for a contribution towards a rebuild.
I always thought you need to pay 100% for fences on your property. Is that expected or is some coordination and contribution/cost sharing expected?
Don’t need a legal opinion, just want to know what’s customary and neighborly.
Update: OT downvotes me and suggests I contribute and then a few pages later, the consensus is you pay for fences on your property.

There are very specific laws in the LA Civil Code regarding fences if you end up going that way. I have always told the neighbor I am willing to spend a weekend with them building the fence. If he just wants you to bust out the checkbook, I would say it depends on how much and your ability to pay. Is the quote reasonable, is the fence design reasonable, can you afford it? If it's a standard fence, he isn't hiring his brother in laws or something and it's in your budget I would pay for half. If he wants some fancy shite, is using some crazy high priced contractor or he lives in a mansion that backs up to your trailer, I would tell him no.

They can build a fence that doesn't have a good side or a bad side, maybe someone can tell us what that's called.

Does his insurance not cover everything with a deductible? Split his deductible and let his insurance cover the rest. Hope it isn’t a high deductible though.

Ignoring the law for a second, I would be willing to pay half if I liked the fence/wall being put up and felt as though I had the same aesthetics from the fence as the neighbor did. If there is a "bad side" and I'm on it, I might be more inclined to pay 25% or so. But I wouldn't flat refuse unless they were planning on putting up something stupid.

Where I live there are not any houses behind us yet and it is made clear that the homeowners are responsible for the back fence and the side that is to the east. So this would be easily settled if your neighborhood had that kind of set up but it isn’t always so simple. Not sure what happens when houses eventually go behind and we share the back fence.

It is my understanding that one is responsible when the “ugly side” faces you. However, when it’s in between homes, I’m in favor of splitting the cost. Both homeowners are benefiting.
