I inherited a project from a previous manager. The project plan was already put togetger. I didn't review it or even if I did, I did not change anything. I had been the manager for 8 months before go-live.

The go-live was a complete disaster. Everything failed and we were in worse shape than before we went live and cost the company all progress in this area over the last 20 years.

Would this be my fault or the fault of the previous manager?

You had the opportunity to make changes. You own it.

Managers are in place to solve problems- to figure it out

no one cares about the past, or past employees

Clearly you just need more money to do it right next time.

If you were one of my project managers (I have over 100 PMs running projects), I'd fire you for it.

Make sure you didn't sign off on said project or get your CYA implemented..

I've picked up projects from previous project managers that if not redesigned would have been a disaster. And it's not the previous project manger's fault because conditions are constantly changing. I've had a couple of my projects passed on to other project managers and they tried to play the blame game on me. Total bull shite and I had none of it. If you are executing the plan that is your plan and you make adjustments as field conditions are warranted.

You should have changed it.
You inherited a bad plan from a clown.
I’d fire you both!

I mean a 20 year project you inherited the last 8 months of you kinda just do what you can with what you're given.

I throw another part to your hypothetical.

You took over multiple projects from the previous manager and totally scrapped all of them (because you told everyone the prior management was incompetent) … except for this one.

Also, even if the previous plan was shitty, it’s still your job to make sure that no one dies.

You are not being honest withyourself. You took on a project "in progress" for the last 20 years and YOU had total control over the execution of the project wrap-up so YEA you're fuct.
