skid plate you can buy with keyed nuts that’ll cover your cats
This city/state manages continually to get worse, and Montana winters start sounding better every day.

It's ok bro. There was a time where I had all four tires and wheels stolen. They left it sitting on gardening stones. So the only way to lift the vehicle was to find a dealer with a jack that could lift the car and come out to the location to out temp tires on it.

I haven’t read past the first post so it might’ve been mentioned, but I think there is a skid plate you can buy with keyed nuts that’ll cover your cats to keep this from happening again.
There are a few options. Most only cover the front 2 cats. These are the ones I ordered.

Guy is in Houston. He got laid off and started fabbing up cat plates. Expect a wait if you order any. Between demand and material shortage he is always back ordered. If you have a 4WD these are great as the transfer case helps block access to the rear cats. If you have a 2WD the rear protection isn't the best. Last I recall he was redesigning the rear plate to better protect 2WD Tundras.

My buddy bought a Dodge Ram TRX a few months back. Last week some shitstains stole both catalytic converters off it.
It cost him $4000 to get them replaced.
Death penalty is fine by me.

Is it just Toyota trucks specifically? Do they hit cars and vans? Just curious why Toyota trucks in particular. (I am not knowledgeable when it comes to these things)

It's any vehicle. Trucks are easy because you can slip under with a recip saw and be gone in seconds. I have a Tundra, but I am not sure if it's more common than other brands... I think it's really just access.
I believe Toyota Priuses is the most prized target by thieves due to amount of precious metal content.

So if you have a vehicle that sits higher, you could be at risk in any parking lot in BR. Nice.

Just happened to me. May be 3 months until I can get replacements

You’d probably see more jail time for confronting the thief and throwing a punch than the perp would see if they stole the car and shot someone.

wife has a Jeep and got rear-ended at a traffic light a few weeks ago, the other vehicle was a small Ford and ran up underneath her car, knocking the catalytic converter from it's mounts, it was drivable but that thing was just hanging there begging to be stolen, can't believe it survived log enough to make it to the shop

I think the yotas have a few of them and are easy to get at

According to this board there must be a shitload of loud arse trucks down south.
No issue in rural WI. We don't steal cats and don't buy Toyotas.

Thieves are emboldened in New Orleans and Baton Rouge nowadays. They know the police forces have their hands tied and they have free rein over the city to do whatever they want.

Accidentally caught a thief in the act of cutting the exhaust pipe on my F250. I remote cranked my truck in the parking lot at work while the thief's sawzall was trying to get through the front section of exhaust pipe. I didn't know it at the time as he was able to get away. In the next few days, I began to smell the diesel exhaust fumes much more strongly than normal. Then I would get a puff of bluish-grey smoke from under the truck after I drove for 15 minutes or so. Crawled under my truck to find the pipe halfway cut through
4 weeks, $100 deductible and $4,600+ total cost later, my truck is back to new. Gotta thank my insurance company for making it whole again and replacing the entire exhaust unit.
To top it off, I reviewed the security cameras here at work and my truck was the third one this POS had crawled under to try to steal. The other 2 were deleted already.

Plus supposedly they are super easy to access.
I'd think some strategically welded rebar would prevent this.

quote:Small government conservatives claim we already have too many laws in this country. Now we want auto parts specific laws on top of car theft laws?
Lobby your representatives for new laws with harsher sentences for thieves and laws aimed at holding the BUYERS accountable.
Electric vehicles will eventually solve this problem.
