define need.
are african americans unable to swim without these special swim caps? Does swimming without this swim cap out them at any type of competitive disadvantage? Or rather yet, is it just a political statement?

s every fricking thing racist anymore?
Yes, which means not very much actually is thankfully.
And this seems stupid on the surface. Let them wear that cap and slow themselves down, and the problem will take care of itself IMO. I'm not sure why a swimmer, whose main focus should be less resistance in the water, would want to wear that anyway (or not have short hair for competitions). Doesn't make much sense, but then again not much else does with the "everything is racist" crowd.

Yes- swimmers undergo rigorous training just to compete for a spot on the Olympic team, just to go make a statement. frick those medals.
Seems legit.
Seems legit.

So wear a normal cap? I don't know why this is even a thing.

…. Probably just 1 or possibly none. But that’s just shooting from the hip.
Such foolishness.

Are white people unable to swim without swim caps they've been wearing for decades?

Of course it does.

Because a normal one more than likely doesn’t hold their hair in as well.

I wonder the same. I’d imagine if you’re competing at the Olympic level you would do anything to shave seconds off your time, including cutting your hair to reduce drag. It’s not racist, it’s physics.

this has to be one of the most disingenuous and ignorant statements i’ve seen on the OT in a while

No kidding.
I'd bet the vast majority of my time in the water was in bayous with alligators, public beaches and lakes. Only went to pools once in a great while.

Guessing the people that implemented this ban didn't take the time to understand the need for these caps for black swimmers.
I had to go research this a bit because this was the first I'd heard of it.
Thing is, this isn't a "need" for black female swimmers. It's a "need" for any swimmer that feels the need to have giant amounts of hair that can not be fit into a traditional sized cap that fits a human head. If some white woman decided to be an Olympic swimmer and also have giant dreads, or tons of Crystal Gale long arse hair, she too would find it difficult to fit it all into a regular sized cap.

Men solve that problem by either shaving their heads or by keeping their hairstyles short enough so that they can easily slap a cap on.

Women solve it by keeping their hair styles short enough to do this as well...because they care about being good in their sport. And also...

Somehow she managed.

It's just the opposite where I live. Black people flock to the public pools and the hillbillies go out to the creeks and ponds.

Physics is based off of math, and as we all know math is racist and a creation of the white man.
Therefore physics is in fact racist.

this cap would be a competitive hinderance compared to a standard cap.
that's what I was wondering, in a sport where a tenth of second means so much, why wear it?
in these races the people in them, don't even know who won
