In response to the ruling by the the International Swimming Federation regarding swimming caps for women of color: This is racism, even in the swimming pool.

African American women are born with a certain texture of hair, and this new invention called the Soul Cap helps with hair care as they swim.

Swimming in the communities of color is already a phobia. I was taught to swim in a segregated swimming pool because my sister and I were not permitted to swim in the city pools. Therefore, if African Americans did not have access to safe swimming environments, many times they would swim in rivers, lakes and creeks. These unsafe conditions caused many young people of color to drown.

This phobia is even present today. My mission is to eradicate this phobia by education and teaching swimming safety and swimming lessons. This ruling by the International Swimming Federation does not help our efforts.

This is such a poorly written article that this moron doesn't even explain what the actual ruling/problem is in the fricking article. This is just straight up bad "journalism".

Idiotic thing to ban. If anything, this cap would be a competitive hinderance compared to a standard cap.

ETA: solid marketing ploy by the creators of the product

Driving the news: Soul Cap, the British Black-owned company that made the caps, told BBC that FINA argued the hats do not "fit the natural form of the head" and that to their "best knowledge the athletes competing at the international events never used, neither require to use, caps of such size and configuration."

Didn’t read the article but the banning of swim caps for the black athletes with the natural hair is kind of bizarre. It’s not like it aids them in any kind of way.

Hydrodynamics is a racist social construct and should be banned from the olympics

I don't think it is racist and I think the article totally goes off the rails, but banning a cap that's big enough to hold some people's wild manes of hair seems silly.

That said, how many Olympic swimmers even have this issue?

I don’t think swimming caps are the main reason blacks don’t participate in swimming.

probably the ones that are there to make a statement and bring their cause into the spotlight as opposed to actually being there to compete for, and represent their country?

Guessing the people that implemented this ban didn't take the time to understand the need for these caps for black swimmers. Doubt it was done with intentional racist malice, but more just from ignorance. And I don't mean that in the pejorative.
