re: People are now complaining about free food handouts - not enough gluten or dairy free

There's a rather large difference between being "gluten intolerant" and having celiac disease. Based on this mother's response, I'm going to venture to guess her little precious is "gluten intolerant" along with a bunch of other "intolerances" instead of actual diagnosed diseases.

well, when the little girl is shitting blood, maybe you'd reconsider your snarky attitude.

True story.
In California, they had to set up a bunch of homeless hotels for COVID-19 so that they can "shelter in place".
Tried to divert school contracts for food, since school is out, to have the food instead made/brought to the homeless hotels.
Food good enough for high school students, was deemed not good enough for homeless who a week before were eating out of trash cans.
The $5.84 for three meals a day, turned to $45 a day. They made this change to allow for dietary restrictions, like kosher and halal, and also for gluten-free and vegan.
In San Francisco, the cost per homeless in a hotel room was over $8,000/ month.

I can understand how this would be upsetting. You don't know why she's there. Maybe she had a job good enough to get by 18 months ago.
Contrary to the belief of this board, some people actually can't eat gluten or dairy.
Well they had potatoes and salsa. She isn't going to starve. Beggars can't be choosers.

Why is she at a food pantry when she’s probably getting WIC and over $500 monthly food stamps?

Just call it what it is. I hate that people have sugar coated reality.
Reality is they can't afford themselves, yet had children.
Reality is they want others to take care of them.
Reality is they take no responsibility for their plight.
How fricking sad their life is going to be.

That's not universally true

Not universally true, but more prevalent than not.

I have no issue with the mother asking if there are gluten fee options, but her running to the paper to bitch when they didn't have as many options as she'd like definitely rubs me the wrong way.

She might not have even been complaining about the options. Reporter could have asked if there was anything she would like to see improved and went with this headline for the rage clicks.

I honestly don't see the issue here. This isn't a case of some privileged moron losing their mind over not having options for their new diet craze. This is a mother who is in, assumingly, a shite spot with a daughter who has food allergies and I can empathize with not having many options of what you can feed you child

If it made you violently ill I don't think that would be the attitude
Then perhaps that might be incentive for YOU to do whatever is necessary to ensure you can get whatever food you need rather than EXPECT charity to accommodate your particular issue.

Yes, a 2 year old having allergies is a direct repaonse to poor decision making
No, the 2 year old's mother having to rely on and demanding that a CHARITY accommodate her child's special dietary issue is the problem. Perhaps it is because I have some pride, self respect and a sense of responsiblity, but I would do whatever is necessary to provide for my child rather than expecting someone else to do so. Even if that meant tremendous self sacrifice on my part.
The charity is doing something THEY AREN'T OBLIGATED TO DO simply to help others. So again, the simple response should be: "This is what we have to GIVE you. If you don't want it, that's fine. But we aren't going to go out of our way to accommodate your special interest." Accommodate your own damn special interests

Very, very few people. Far less than those that claim they can't. That's tough shite for those people too.

We are the fattest food insecure nation in history.
