Sources tell @RossDellenger and I: Expect news this afternoon from the College Football Playoff management committee. After a meeting today, a release is coming based on a recommendation for an expanded playoff.
Ross Dellenger has weighed in:

Sources tell me & @ByPatForde that the CFP working group is recommending a 12-team playoff: 6 highest-ranked conference champs & 6 at-large.
The 4 highest-ranked champs get a bye while other 8 play 1st-round games on campus.
Long way from done, but this is the recommendation.

Well the regular season just got even more pointless

An announcement that it's a done deal, or an announcement of an outlined plan that they hope to push through? I'm confused.
Edit: Looks like it will be the announcement of a first step. Nothing will be official for a bit I assume. Still, looks like it's inevitable.

Counter point: more games
Will be meaningfully later in the season.
The more teams Playing for a playoff spot means more games actually mean something.
Tell me how a game between a couple
Of teams with 2 losses Means something with a 4 game playoff?
We are still culling from 125 teams to 12.
(I think 8 is the sweet spot but whatever)

Depends on who you are.
Seems to me this is destined to happen because Bowl games don't mean as much so schools perennially on the outside looking in need the chance to make the playoff to keep their money flowing.

Complete and utter nonsense...

Note: It's "six highest-ranked conference champions," not "Power 5 + 1 G5."
This is just a recommendation, but if it comes to pass that'd be a hell of a coup for the G5.

How did the CFP go so quickly from defending 4 teams to recommending 12?
Because the SEC got behind it.
8 teams with only 2 at-larges does nothing for the SEC. "8 best" w/ no automatics does nothing for the other leagues.
This pleases all parties.

The pros of no conference being guaranteed anything is it prevents a 7-5 Pitt scenario.
But there's a big con: If I'm Oregon, why would I schedule tough OOC and risk going 9-3, winning the Pac-12 and still not making it?

Think about what it would take for a team like OU or Clemson to not make a 12 team field?
Both are favored in every game, usually by double digits.
They could go 10-2 every year and they are in

fricking horrible. It will ruin the regular season. And guess what- everyone will still bitch about who got left out, but at an even greater level. Now there will be 10 two loss teams expressing outrage over why they deserve to be in.

Exactly!! You cant tell these people, the regular season in college football hasnt meant ANYTHING for 30+ years. 30+ bowl games with 5-7 teams being awarded their welfare field trip, but hey, dont let those facts get in your way.

I don't think it changes much, you still have byes for the top teams to play for. Other teams playing for first round true home games. Seems like a solid format.
Give me more playoff games over meaningless bowl games anyday.

Oh look ESPN campaigning to have more control over something that they will continue to ruin.

Bama a lock each year since that inexplicable loss on the plains at Jordan-Hare won't keep them out of the playoffs.

That, and we've seen over and over that it's typically the two or three teams that have a shot and the sacrificial lamb. There will be the occasional upset which is the excitement the NCAA would want, but the best teams will still be there at the end. They will basically be creating more participation trophy opportunities.
