We're planning a trip around Halloween to be there for day of the dead and getting started on planning now. So far all we've really booked is the hotel and the taco omakase at Pujol. Has anyone been before? Any suggestions?

Definitely do both of Shaun's suggestions. Something else that I would highly recommend is to see the Ballet Folklorico. The theater, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, is stunning, and the mariachi music is as good as it gets.

Oh, I can't wait for you to tell us why the OP shouldn't go.

Sir, this is not a New Orleans thread.

Because it's in Mexico.

Absolutely loved Mexico City. Second Shaun’s suggestions. There is a large Saturday art market we enjoyed. And go see the monarch butterflies. For me that was a truly special experience. Bring binoculars if you go.

Mexico City is awesome. Went a few years ago over Easter. Wanting to go back next year.

Floating Gardens, museum and pyramids were all cool. For the Pyramids we hired the hotel valet guy for the day and he drove us out and gave us a tour. We ended up eating dinner with him haha. I think we paid $60 USD.

Random, but one night they had Lucha Libra wrestling event at Arena Mexico. I convinced my wife to go...it was honestly one of the funniest and fun nights I've ever had.

I ended up changing my flights to stay an extra day.

So, drive down and make a road trip out of it. It should be perfectly safe.

wtf are you talking about?
pretty sure (I’ll check my notes) that the OP didn’t mention driving there...

Mexico City is a world class destination on par with London, Paris, Madrid, Rome etc. and it’s a few hours flight away

I would venture to say I felt more safe in Mexico City than I do when I go back and visit New Orleans.

Thanks for the feedback on this. I had it on my list and my wife has been highly skeptical

The crime stats for the city must be a myth then.

It was honestly a blast. Probably 12k people in the arena. I was expecting a little place.

We bought some tickets off a scalper and were in 3rd row ringside. It was 3 hours of pure entertainment, even if you don't like wrestling. People watching was top notch. The little old abulitas take that stuff seriously. Haha

The murder rate in Baton Rouge and New Orleans is more than three times high as the rate in Mexico City.

Are there parts of the city that are unsafe? Yes, just as there are parts of many US cities that are unsafe. But tourists are very unlikely to see any of those areas, unless they go to the Topito market, which every website or guidebook will tell you is risky.

And driving from Mexico City up to Queretaro (as I have done) or over to Puebla is also perfectly safe and not very difficult. Most of Mexico is very safe to drive.

Glad I could educate you.
