Not to mention rolling up to Hatch during the chili season and buy fresh roasted hatch chilis by the bucket.

No kidding. I love visiting for work during hatch season.

I’ll agreee with most in that El Paso is a nice city. I would not want to live there but there are tons of great restaurants (BBQ and Mexican) and the area north of UTEP is very nice.

It seemed like a normal, safe desert town whenever I'd go for work.

Mexicans are terrible drivers, though. It seems like lanes are optional out there.

I saw Professor Gillman over in Bisbee.

He catches stuff.

El Paso is pretty safe, crime stats back this up as well. Laredo is in the same boat too if you want to look at another border town.

Some say crossing into Juarez is safe. Personally, I wouldn’t do it unless you had a specific reason to do so. Nuevo Laredo might even be worse.

But yeah, El Paso is a bit of a hidden gem. Lots of poverty there obviously, but some nice areas as well. Crime seems to stay in its place, if you will.

Just stay away from Rosa's cantina. I fell in love with a Mexican girl there, once. Didnt end well.

The Counselor was another good one that made El Paso look like the Cartel did as they pleased.

They’ve imported this delicacy to Houston too.

Ya, known locally as the west side. That's where I lived. Had a nice apartment that was directly over the pool.

I ran thorough so many women in El Paso. Damn I miss that town. Was safe from what I saw and that was with me going to strip clubs/random bars.

“Its great. Everything is awesome. But nah frick that place.”

But seriously though. I agree.

i like almost all the people i work with and everybody is very friendly. trail running is great in the mountains. tons of great food. UTEP is an awesome campus and i'd love to catch a game and the stadium built in the mountain.

but.... it's hot AF and i hate the heat. i grew up in not quite as west Texas and hated the heat there. it's pretty relentless except for december and january. when it snows out there it is beautiful in the mountains.

also, not that i'm opposed to living in a town that is liberal or has people that look differently than me (i grew up around 50% hispanic population) but those people absolutely worship Beto and love him out there. Beto is the single least intelligent person i've ever had the pleasure of not voting for. people can crap on Cruz all day for his Cancun thing, but go back and watch their debates and you will realize that the man is literally a blithering idiot.

also, they were absolutely paralyzed with COVID fear last year. made the trips out there miserable.

because he advocates for el paso and the rio grade valley...that's been his job for fifteen years (city council then US House rep). as evidenced by this thread that region gets a bad rap that it doesnt deserve.

i feel like most people have said very nice things about EP in this thread.

I also go to the RGV for work often and love the people there. My favorite customers in Texas. I'd rather work with people in the valley than people from Houston, DFW, or Austin.

that's fine. my state rep (R) sucks and i'm an R.

i have 0 doubt Beto's a decent dude, although there's some evidence to the contrary like all politicians. but i repeat, he's the dumbest person i've ever voted against.

They also speak better English in El Paso.

What is there to do around El Paso in terms of outdoor activities?

In town (Franklin Mountains) or within an hour drive (Organ Mountains, Hueco Tanks) there is lots of hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing.

Within 2-3 hours you have Gila and Lincoln NFs which offer hiking, backpacking, fishing, hunting, car camping. Also Elephant Butte is 2 hours north for boating, fishing.

Lots of BLM land on the border with NM for ATVs and off roading.

Mainly desert/sky island type shite, same as ABQ, Tucson/Phoenix/Las Vegas.

I’m in El Paso regularly for work. It’s an incredibly safe town.

Nice people. Some really good Mexican food.

No amount of money would ever make me live there.

Seconded. Love visiting, would take doubling my salary to move there.

Work in El Paso a week a year. Wouldn't live there because it is simply too damn hot.

Crazy seeing what Juarez looks like across the border (You can literally see it across the top of the wall). Between military and border patrol there is a huge police presence. I have never felt unsafe there at all while walking around downtown at night.

I know the city...
Very safe...ranked top safety for size...
Has border patrol office and army fort so lots of armed Leo type...

One side is rather wealthy as you go to New Mexico....nice houses up against the mountain or old historic area...lots of family money with people in living in us and businesses across the border...people are nice ...downtown being redone and more cosmopolitan that you would expect...yes ..isolated ....

The rougher side is around the military base because of income ...

Not enough green for me but I like the swamp...

Yes Beto lives close to downtown in historic area in a very nice house...

Crime you are thinking about is not really in us...they know there are a lot of border agents and pent up army staff looking for excitement...
