In New Orleans and elsewhere a big topic is gentrification.

Gentrification is simply when "privileged" people move into an area an fix it up and raise the value of houses and rent. The opponents say that this displaces residents.
At the same time we often blame White Flight for the fall of the urban centers. This fall led to the lower prices that allowed cheaper rents in the first place.
If flight was so bad, why is reversing it also bad?
If you owned a house in a crappy area that was never worth more than $100k in the time you owned it, now turn into a $500k property would you be upset?
Then how come it's wrong to point out the inverse of Gentrification? When once nice areas are ruined by an influx of section 8 housing. This is an equal problem to Gentrification in my opinion.
I just don't see how moving into an area and fixing it up is ever bad.
The people there now could have fixed it up first themselves.

That depends. If my taxes go through the roof, yes.

Can you still afford the now substantially higher property taxes?

Its as if they want red lines drawn on a map for only certain demographics....

Gentrification is fantastic for reducing crime
Gentrification is horrible if you need that crime to keep your property taxes low

People that bitch about gentrification are idiots. It's just people jealous of what you have, but didn't make the choices necessary to obtain it themselves.

When the gays move in the blacks move out.
Black people hate gays.

In Louisiana your neighbors property tax just increased 17 fold, went from paying property tax on 25K to 425K after homestead exemption.

Yep
We built multiple houses in gentilly and every time we were approached by a neighbor who had been living there forever and were not pleased to see property values rise due to the tax implications

quote:Personally, I'm of the opinion that gentrification is an inevitability and isn't a bad thing overall when it does happen, but you'll be better able to understand why some people don't like it when you view the above scenario from the perspective of a renter.
If you owned a house in a crappy area that was never worth more than $100k in the time you owned it, now turn into a $500k property would you be upset?
Imagine that you rent the above house for $700 a month. Of course you'd like to live somewhere nicer, but you need affordable housing, it's close to your job, and your elderly mom lives right down the street so that makes it easier to look after her.
When the $100k house you've been renting turns into a $500k house, your rent goes up significantly. You either dig deeper every month to pay rent or you're forced to move, which means giving up everything you liked about the place where you used to live plus all the expense and hassle of moving.
From an economic standpoint, that's why some people don't like gentrification. No economic change benefits everyone at the same time.

You can not allow an area to literally fall down and look like absolute shite

Because you can never make the black community happy. Quit trying…..

Get a better paying job if you can't afford it.

You should just improve the areas out of the kindness of your heart and expect nothing in return except your ability to virtue signal with your mask and vaccine card.
The fact you don’t get it only shows your privilege and support of the capitalist systemic racist economy.
