Aren't they about to give a huge incentive package to Oracle?

Big mistake if so

Such a Louisiana way of thinking. Exact reason why the state is set back decades financially.

A major corporation coming to town creating thousands of well paying jobs and bringing a $2 billion investment is never a mistake. It’s what creates economies that truly last. Tax breaks for these types of businesses are pennies in order to bring dollars

Who’s gonna fill their shoes

Compared to other businesses Nashville has recently courted, Oracle didn't get a whole lot from the city. We gave them a 50% cut on property taxes and a tunnel under the interstate. Oracle will invest $175 in infrastructure that will then be turned over to the city. That area of land generates about $900k in property taxes right now. It will generate an estimated $8.8 million when Oracle is done with it. Plus they will provide 8500 full time jobs and turn an industrial brownfield into a commercial campus.

$175? Wow!

But seriously, 8,500 jobs is awesome.

The city is dependent on tourism and entertainment. If Music City has no music, it’s makes things tricky. Long term city will be fine. Ritz Carlton is about to start construction. Amazon is wrapping up HQ here. Oracle is coming. Frist kid is leaving Silicon Valley and moving here. Mitsubishi HQ is close. AllianceBerstein, Smile Direct, etc.

Once the tourism and entertainment sector are back to speed, I like Nashville’s chances.

Nashville’s biggest problem is the sizable portion of California that has moved there...a problem that will get bigger with every passing year.

I lived there for more than 10 years and would never go back, it's a city that was built on small aspirations that grew too big, three major interstates merge near downtown. The traffic sucks really bad, 10 miles from work and 45 minutes to drive it. There are charming things about it and it's ok to visit, but living there is hell.

While you are correct in theory, La has a history of offering incentives for companies that fail to provide the return promised.

I’m not arguing with your premise, just offering a reason for the skepticism and “thinking” of a La resident. We’ve been promised much and contributed even more. But the returns have seldom appeared.

But I don't really get the premise that a city with debt is dead. What's that even mean?

I think it’s more about the hype and future trajectory.

If most citizens are in debt and the city is being mismanaged (as most are), then Nashville will go the same route many large cities go. Lots of homelessness. Increase in crime. Absurd housing/rent costs that cannot keep up with the population’s SES.

Nashville can completely burn to the ground and then be taken over by locusts and would still be light years better than NOLA.
