I have this thing and it is awful. Installing shelving last night it was about 50% accurate and caused many hole patches. It is ~10 years old so maybe its going bad, who knows. Looking to get a new one

Get an electric razor. Turn it on and hold against the wall. Slide left and right and the sound will change drastically over a stud.

I had a cheap harbor freight one but it was so frustrating. Got a dewalt and it’s so much better.

I had the same one and same frustrations. I bought a Franklin Sensors one and like it so much better. This is the one I have LINK

Stud magnets will work 99% of the time. Don't waste your money on that electrical crap that doesn't work.

In low risk situations, the Franklin is the bomb. I’ve learned, though, for small diy projects on walls, ceilings near obstructions like plumbing or HVAC electrical service (don’t ask), it’s worth the time to double check with an awl or magnet.
ETA: I’ll never use my zircon again — see hvac reference above.

I like to use a combo of magnets with Franklin.

I got a magnet and it’s the best thing since sliced bread

Magnet. This after fooling with the battery powered devices that illuminate and beep.

anything good wont be cheap and anything cheap isnt very good
i have bought around a dozen of them from cheap to not so cheap and they all just kinda sorta work and you still left guessing where the stud is within that last 3" its registering the stud is.
if you want a good one, then start around $100 price or better, if your ok with a cheap one save the $20-$30 and just tap on the wall and you will be around the same boat trying to guess where it is in that 3" area then use magnets to find the nails/screws to mark the stud exactly

I’m batting 100% with my Franklin sensor since I bought it this winter as far as I can remember. It’s nothing special other then having so many sensors that you can more clearly see the studs.
I don’t really like magnets personally because you are relying on a drywall guy hitting the stud accurately. If you ever pull drywall, everyone misses studs or goes into the ends routinely. Much easier with the Franklin to hit the middle imo.

Reporting back that the Franklin one linked from Lowe’s above was awesome. Got it this morning, hung shelving, zero stud misses. Thanks for the rec

My wife did a pretty good job of finding her stud.
