Price gouging and/or rations should be allowed in a time like this - I couldn’t fit rationing in the title. The amount of idiots filling up every tank they can find is ridiculous. People that need it are struggling to find it because of these fools, and the panic just breeds more panic. I’d rather pay $4/gallon and/or only get 8 gallons at a time than get nothing at all.

I just watched the president's speech and he said he has federal agencies watching for price gouging. What can the feds do if some gas station wants to charge $20 a gallon? I didn't know the price of gas was federally controlled.

I actually get your point but what do you expect? With todays social media and fear tactics its inevitable. Once it hits the news it spreads like wildfire.

Price controls lead to shortages

You either allow gouging or you have shortages.

I had a friend who was banned from this board for saying the same thing. You are correct. It would prevent hoarding and provide means for the most desperate among us to have access to supply. Too much sky screaming these days to allow markets to work and everybody in this country is dirt poor and can't pay for higher gas prices when there's an imbalance.

Guess what? The most desperate among us cant shell out $10 for gas
And she won’t get any if Billy Bob loads up all his 250 gallon trailer tanks because it’s still $2.50/gal

Rational versus Emotional response.

I agree with your post even if publicly unpopular.

Sure because you can afford $4/gallon gas. A lot of people cannot. Perhaps there should be gas station that offer it for $4 a gallon and if you make over $75k a year you can only go to that station. That’s basically what they did with stimulus.

There's no such thing as price gouging (unless it's gov't sanctioned ala drug company overcharging b/c it holds the only patent granted by FDA).

Price controls are the always the worst solution. The gov't should be advertising where people can get gas.

Anti-gouging laws are not only economically incorrect, they are immoral.

There is no such thing as price gouging.

It’s a made up term like “trickle down” or “assault rifle”

supply/demand and scarcity. That’s it.

And any time the state tries to influence either of those, there is never enough or so much that we pay farmers to burn crops.
Either way it’s inefficient and dumb.

Gouging- hard no. Raise the price to try and curb demand, but 50+% increase over a couple of days is crazy.

Rationing? Absolutely. These states probably wouldn't be in the position they're in if stations limited each transaction to 15-20 gallons. Trucks/SUV's won't be able to fill up from E, and Corolla's may get a gas can filled in addition to their tank, but you wouldn't have (as many) people filling up trash bags and doing other ridiculous things to hoard gas.

I think the definition of gouging needs to be widened, but I think most times it works on its self out. I am for it in most cases.

15 years back and I wish I would have documented it better. Hurricane hit Texas/La. Either screwed up refineries or pipelines. Everybody made a run on gas. Price is Savannah went to like 4.75 or so. People raising hell. Stores posting invoices. It took about 2 days to fill store tanks back up and in 5 days the price was back down.
Mayor of Atlanta said anybody charging more than like 3.50 would go to jail. They scrounged for gas for 3 or 4 weeks.

Another story, after Hugo a local Ace hardware sold chain saws and coolers for about 5 times the going rate at the time. I remember something near 1500 for chain saw. I know people still to this day that won't shop there and it's changed ownership 3 times.

I didn't live through this past Texas freeze so it's hard to have an opinion but some of the stuff I read on energy seemed off. People don't have a choice on energy. I can choose not to buy something at hardware store or buy 10 gallons of gas instead of 50. You have what you have with energy.

Post this on the OT and the downvotes will out number the upvotes by 3 to 1.

It's a shame how many even on this board don't understand why what your'e saying is good.
