I know I can find sites that do this, but I was curious what the OT thinks.

Here's the deal! I'm thinking of buying a mid-size SUV sometime next year. V6 is fine. 4 ppl comfortably. Decent gas milage. Under 30k. I'd love under 25k. I'm thinking I might have a 10k
deposit, so a sub 15k loan/note seems sweet...haven't had an actual car note since 2015.

Those of you with first hand knowledge, what say you? What would you buy based on current vehicles?

Thanks!

It's probably going to be pretty hard to find what you are looking for at that price range. There aren't many "mid-size" SUV's starting at below $30k unless you get the absolute base model.

People (mostly women) seem to really like the new Kia/Hyundai SUVs. You might be able to find one close to $30k (or slightly below). Otherwise, you probably want to look at a compact SUV in that price range

We just went through this process. Your needs and desires are likely different than ours, but bang for buck we thought the Ford Edge was the best one we test drove. We were replacing an Edge though so were already familiar with the make and model. Gets 22mpg in city, and 29mpg on the highway. Models we test drove or kicked the tires on in the lot....

Subaru Forrester - too small
Honda CR-V - too small
Honda Pilot - the one at our price point had too many miles.
Toyota Highlander - Overpriced for what it was
Lexus RX350 - forget what the wife didn't like about it.
Lexus NX300 - Too small
Acura RDX - too small
Acura MDX - a little over our budget, but could have made it work. A very close 2nd.
Infiniti QX60(I think)- Wife loved it but I talked her out of it because of the CVT transmission.

I think that's it. We drove off the lot right under $25k for the Edge.

We bought a Chevrolet Traverse two years ago bc it was the only thing that could fit all of us for the price we wanted to pay - it was under $30K

I'm looking at a new Toyota Venza. Haven't test drove yet but on our list to. You can get a brand new base model for a little over $30k

We got an Atlas a couple years ago and it was sub 30. Great car for the price. But Geez is the car market nuts right now.

My wife got a 2021 GMC Terrain SLE for 26,500 a little over a month ago, the sticker price was 28,000. I’m pretty sure the model below it was 25,000. It fits 4 easily and plenty of storage room in the back.

To the OP-

You say V6 is fine. Does that mean you will consider going up to a V6 engine if it is an option? Are you looking for a V6 engine or will a turbo four-cylinder suffice?

Do you need it to tow anything beyond a tiny trailer?

Do you care about things like AWD or four-wheel drive?

The VW Atlas is a sharp looking ride, my neighbor has one. They're around $30k-$32k

Maybe a CRV or Rav4.

If you really want mid sized, you might be able to find a Honda Pilot or Subaru Outback for under $30,000. It will be pretty stripped down though.

Also check to see if the Mazda CX5 is big enough.

You'd honestly have a lot more options if you went with a sedan - Altima, Accord, Camry, Passat, Malibu, K5, Sonata, etc. are all very well equipped for $30K.

Like others have said I would look at the Mazda CX-5 or CX-9. You could get either one that is a couple of years old fairly well equipped for 25-30k. My favorite thing about them is they handle extremely well.
