Elon Musk could figure this shite out in a week and only require $1B in government grants to do it.

Early on, an FCM formation called the Elephant’s Foot was so hard scientists had to use a Kalashnikov rifle to shear off a chunk for analysis.

For some reason I found this statement very humorous. I guess it's better than saying "A comrade unloaded a 30 round magazine out of his Ak47 and knocked pieces of radioactive shite everywhere"

The first stage is in place over the reactor and can be seen easily on Google earth.

It’s been completed several years ago but it was only meant to provide protection until a more permanent solution was found. IIRC it was for 50 years. That was a killer documentary. I know exactly which one you’re talking about.

This kid and his friends sneak into Chernobyl's Exclusion zone.

I believe this is the video of the second time he snuck in. He has some pretty enteresting videos outside of this one.

do we no longer believe in science?
They thought no life could exist for centuries, and the animal life has flourished. There are mutants, though. I think they've walked a lot of the half life stuff back too. Science is often wrong. It's the nature of science to be so, but people are made to worship it like a religion these days, for political purposes.

I thought this scenario Is why we developed drones.

The radiation levels in the basement are still so high it would dry the electronics before the drone even got close enough.

And here's a picture of the "Elephant's Foot" next to the largest brass balls in the world.

The "Elephant's Foot" at Chernobyl - possibly the most dangerous "rock" on Earth. It's a portion of the reactor core mixed with concrete, metal and probably Soylent Green.

Part of the melted down core of Chernobyl No. 4. At one point, it was the most lethal single object on the planet. 30 seconds near it was certain death. It's not as lethal now. You can spend whole minutes near it and maybe not die.

The picture of those balls up above was taken in 1996. The guy dragging them around is still alive, at least as of 2019, though he's got to be tired hauling those things around all these years. He went in and stood next to the murder rock, got his pictures, and got the frick out before the Elephant's Foot killed him to death.

It's been 35 years. It's not as hilariously lethal as it used to be and they've mapped out the radiation levels in the ruined reactor pretty well by this point so they know where they can and can't linger. With the proper PPE and precautions (for instance, holding the sensor of a Geiger counter out ahead of you on a stick so you know to stop fricking walking when it goes off the scale), it's a reasonable facsimile of "safe"-ish.
