Agreed. I caught my son trying to read a book on my tablet. I grabbed that from him so quick and put him in front of the tv like a responsible parent.

That is where the parenting is lazy. Their is a huge disparity between letting your kid have a tablet unchecked and supervised usage.

We have dinner every night as a family with a no devices policy at the table as well.

My kids each have a kindle. All they have on it are ABC mouse, starfall, and the few games I allow them to download. All of their games are puzzle games that they have to solve problems. No YouTube or Netflix is allowed on them.

Also we don’t have cell service on the tablets so they don’t get them on road trips.

You know people did take road trips with kids before the invention of the smart phone/tablet.

I’m from the sandwich generation. Right after there was nothing but either silence, talking, or reading a book. We had a small tv where we watched the same VHS or two.

Giving young kids tablets and smart devices at young ages to get them to shut the frick up is crushing us. I’m 26 years old and I can see it in my own generation and the generation behind me. It is warping our minds and our ability to communicate with each other and get along.

But yes by all means enjoy your silence from your own children. Not like kids being cooped up and annoying isn’t a problem parents haven’t had to deal with since the invention of the automobile or children.

My 7 year old has one and I agree. I loathe that tablet. Thank God she isn't addicted to it like some of her friends are. I have witnessed 5 year olds having a complete meltdown and screaming at a parent because the tablet was taken away for whatever reason (and usually given back due to the tantrum). Our might watch hers 30 minutes a day now. She would rather be outside or playing dress up.

We were on family vacation a few years ago and our kids had melt downs when we wouldn’t let them watch their grandparents iPads or our phones.

At that moment the wife and I decided no more phones at home. This was before we got them tablets. We still don’t let them play in our phones and limit tablet use.

Is giving a kid a tablet to distract them any different than giving a comic book, magazine or book back in the day?

Yes. It is way more stimulation. One from the digital screen in a physical way that’s different from a hard copy book and two from the basically endless content and mental stimulation that way. It is the same effect in terms of occupying yourself to the observer but to that child holding it it is very different having a tablet over a single comic book or movie and being forced to just make due with that one thing.

That's way, way different than sitting little kids on the sofa with tablets so you don't have to interact with - or heaven forbid - play with them.

Know a mom who does this on the regular . She and both daughters have their faces on screens as soon as they hit the door. Dad comes home, cooks dinner, lets them know when it's time to eat.

I gave one sweet daughter the Sleeping Queens card game for Christmas and the mom couldn't figure out the directions. She sent a text to her mother (my friend) saying how stupid the game was and that she knew I'd given it to try to get her to play with her kids...but she sent the text to *me* by mistake.

Next time we visited, I taught the game, which was created by a 6yo, to the girls in about 5 min. Now they play it together. It's a great game that teaches math skills in a fun way.

If you've never experienced a nuclear meltdown at hour 8 of 10, then you don't know. When you can't see straight because a two year old is screaming so loudly, a tablet with pre-downloaded Sesame Street is a godsend.

I'm older than you and took many road trips without any sort of small tv, and I hated every minute of it. A 2 year old strapped in to a car seat all day needs some sort of stimulation to keep from losing their mind.

People also used to let their kids climb all over the backseat while mom and dad smoked in the front seat. It turns out we now have the tools to make road trips safer and more enjoyable for all parties involved.

Right, eventually they will get bored with a comic book or magazine. There is no getting bored with the tablet, there are always different things to look at.

A road trip is a different animal than using a tablet as a babysitter while at home

I could also see how that leads down a slippery slope though.

You're going to get downvoted to hell but you're right.

Kids can learn technology in about 2 seconds, they don't need "practice". My 3 kids can read, draw, play at home or or on a road trip. No electronics needed. Yes, we do/did allow them to watch certain tv programs which they would beg for at times like all kids. Pads are on another level though, and what it does to their brains is unnatural. Stuffing your kids faces in an ipad during social gatherings or whenever you don't want to deal with them will have long term consequences.

ETA:. There are an infinite number of activities that are good for kids and accomplish the same thing. Coloring, painting, play doh, sand boxes, crafts etc. No it's not as convenient for parents, but it's infinitely better for your kids. Let them make messes and explore.

I was of that opinion, however my four year old got an Amazon Free Time tablet about a year ago and is reading whole books now because of it. She is way ahead of where she should be. Some of the learning games are pretty good. She is also way ahead in math. You just have to put the right controls on the content. This was a lifesaver when school shut down early last year.

Are people talking about all day long, or an hour or so throughout the day? I do agree that all day long is not something I want my kids doing, but letting them mess around on the tablet for a bit after playing with them all day is a different story.

And typically, if my kid is on his tablet, I interact with him. Moreso than if we were watching TV or something.

A lot of parents today are afraid to tell their kids to go outside or to go play in their room. They feel like bad parents if they don’t provide entertainment for their kids 24/7, and don’t allow them to go wherever in the house they want. So, to get any fricking peace at all ever, they hand them the tablet because they are tired of the kid following them around saying they are bored. It’s kinda messed up.

my parents had four children and a huge family all over the country. We traveled ALOT. At a minimum it was an hour and a half to the camp every weekend.
We read books, drew on paper, played card games, license plate games, and games we created with our imagination in the car. We didn't have televisions in our bedrooms and the living room television did not have cable. Since I grew up that way I kind of raised my kids that way. Now I have millennials who don't post on social media so I can't see pictures of their life as much as I want to.
